Fundamentals of Financial Analysis
Prerequisites
Admission into the MBA, MSM, MSHRM and Master of Taxation degree programs.
Description
A survey of key concepts in finance that provides a foundation for further study in graduate finance and business courses. Students must earn a grade of “B” or better to satisfy the CPC requirements in Finance.
Objectives
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Understand and explain differences between accounting and finance measures of performance, such asincremental cost, incremental benefit, opportunity cost, sunk cost, as well as the methodological approach of finance.
 - Understand the objectives of the firm, such as shareholder wealth maximization, and the role of financial management.
 - Analyze the financial condition and performance of a firm using financial statement analysis, financial ratio analysis, Du Pont analysis and common size analysis.
 - Apply the concept of the time value of money to value project cash flows.
 - Identify and value real options.
 - Explain the various measures of project, corporate, and portfolio risk, and explain the appropriate relationship between risk and the cost of capital.
 - Value stocks, bonds and derivative securities.
 - Predict the circumstances under which agency problems may arise.
 - Explain the mechanics of financial markets, and interpret the concept of market efficiency.
 - Forecast additional financing requirements.
 - Evaluate capital structure and dividend policy.
 
Purpose
To provide a survey of finance concepts for graduate business degree programs. This course is required for graduate business students who lack a business oraccounting undergraduate degree earned in the last eight years from a college or universityholding AACSB/ACBSP specialized accreditation for its business programs.
