COURSE DESCRIPTION:

A course designed to increase creativity and writing skills in poetry. Emphasis is on analysis and writing of poetry in modern and contemporary forms

PREREQUISITE(S): ENG 101 or instructor approval

TEXT: Sleeping on the Wing, edited by Kenneth Koch and Kate Farrell, The Logan House Anthology, edited by Trent Muth.

COURSE GOALS:

1. To encourage writing poetry on a regular basis.

2. To introduce students to a variety of modern and contemporary styles of poetry.

3. To give students a foundation for analyzing and evaluating poems.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

1. Writing poetry in a variety of styles and forms corresponding to their analysis of modern and contemporary poets.

2. Analyze modern and contemporary forms of poetry for form, content, and aesthetics.

EVALUATION METHODS/GRADING PROCEDURES:

50% Weekly poetry assignments will be evaluated by the instructor on a three point grading scale.

30% Three tests will be given to evaluate comprehension of reading assignments and class discussions.

20% Class participation and inclass assignments.
