[MAST Application Procedure] / May 12, 2010 /

For All MAST Students:

Submit a full application to the Graduate college, including:

  • Application for Graduate Admission (
  • Application processing fee
  • Arizona Residency Verification Form
  • Sealed official transcript from degree-granting college(s) attended (applicant photocopies are acceptable for other transcripts). If you received your degree from NAU, your transcripts are not required.

Apply for the MAST Program Online:

  • Navigate to
  • Select “Begin or return to your application.”
  • Search for NAU Graduate Programs by the Program, Campus location, and/or the Degree level. Under Program, choose Science Teaching, Master of Arts or under Campus/Degree, choose Flagstaff Mountain, Masters, and select Science Teaching (Flagstaff Mountain) Master of Arts
  • Log in to your account
  • Complete the application online.

You will need the following information to complete the application for the MAST Program online:

  • Hours of college level science courses
  • Number of years teaching
  • Courses taught and grade levels
  • Arizona Educator Proficiency Exams Passed

Choose your Program of Interest:

This program requires you to select one basic program plan that corresponds to your program selection. Complete the basic plan by indicating the content areas in which you attend to take coursework (Biology, Chemistry, Geology, or Physics & Astronomy).

MAST for Secondary Teachers: Extended Coursework or Thesis

  • Content Major (24 hours)
  • Content emphasis (18 hours, 6 hours)
  • Dual Emphasis (12 hours, 12 hours)

MAST for Middle Level Teachers: Extended Coursework or Thesis

  • Content Major (24 hours)
  • Content emphasis (18 hours, 6 hours)
  • Dual Emphasis (12 hours, 12 hours)
  • Integrated

MAST for Community College Science Teachers: Extended Coursework or Thesis

  • Content Major (24 hours)
  • Content emphasis (18 hours, 6 hours)

Personal Statements

Teachers interested in the Secondary and Middle Level MAST programs will need to upload or mail a Personal Statement documentexplaining: 1) your current teaching situation, teaching responsibilities, and background in science content and science teaching; 2) why you believe that this program is right for you; 3) what you bring to the program; and, 4) what you hope to take back to your school as a result of participating in this program.

Students interested in the Community College Teaching program will need to upload or mail a Personal Statement document explaining: 1) your background in the sciences, including academic and work experience; 2) your future goals; 3) what types of courses you envision yourself teaching at the community college level; and, 4) why you are interested in teaching science in a college setting. Mail to the address below or attach to the application.

Letters of Recommendation

Letters of recommendation are required. Letters may be requested electronically or you may print a form from the website. It is your responsibility to ensure letters are submitted.

  • Teachers interested in the Secondary and Middle Level MAST Programs: Request one letter of recommendation from a principal, department chair, or other teaching professional who is familiar with your teaching goals, strengths, and challenges.
  • Students interested in the Community College Teaching Program: Request two letters of recommendation from individuals who are familiar with your work in science and who can speak of your ability to succeed in graduate level coursework. If available, one of the letters may speak of your potential as a teacher.
