Sailing Instructions

PURSUIT RACE

Entries will be started using the pursuit start method. This method uses the boats PHRF rating to assign individual starting times to each boat. The highest rating (slower boats) will be given an earlier starting time. The results are determined by the order in which each crosses the start/finish line.

The Sunday race will not be scored as part of the regatta. It is optional, and only a fun accommodation for those wishing to return to Oriental.

1RULES

1.1The regatta will be governed by the rules defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing.

1.2If there is a conflict between the Notice of Race and the Sailing Instructions, the Sailing Instructions shall apply.

2Notices to competitors

Notices to competitors will be posted on the official notice board on the first floor screened porch ofthe River Dunes Harbor Club.

3CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

Any changes to the Sailing Instructions will be posted before0900on Saturday.

4SIGNALS MADE ASHORE

4.1Signals made ashore will be displayed on the flagpole in front of the River Dunes Harbor Club.

4.2When the AP flag is displayed ashore “1 minute” is replaced with “not less than 60minutes”. This changes race signal AP.

6RADIOCOMMUNICATION

The race committee (RC) will communicate all information on VHF channel 78A.

8startING/FINISHING

8.1The starting time for each boat will be posted on the official notice board as soon as entries are complete.

8.2The start/finish (S/F) line will be between a staff displaying an orange flag on the RC signal boat and a yellow mark anchored nearby. The RC signal boat will be anchored a bit NW of a line between GT and PP.

8.3The race committee will communicate all starting times over the radio. All boats will start at their assigned time using GPS time. If a postponement is necessary the change in starting times will be announced over VHF channel 78A.

8.4A boat that starts early will be so notified by radio and she will be required to return to entirely behind the starting line before re-crossing the starting line to race.

9THE COURSE

Addendum A shows the course legs to be used on Saturday. The actual course used will be determined by the wind conditions on the day of the race.

Course 1 boats will proceed northeasterly leaving PP and R“2” to port, round N to port, return leaving R“2” and PP to starboard, and then to the S/F line.

Course 2 boats will proceed southwesterly rounding GT to port, then northeasterly leaving PP and R“2” to port, round N to port, return leaving R“2” and PP to starboard, and then to the S/F line.

Course 3 boats will proceed southwesterly leaving GT to port, northeasterly leaving NR to port, northwesterly leaving N to port, then southwesterly leaving R”2” and PP to starboard and then to the S/F line.

On Saturday the course number (1, 2, or 3) will be shown on a board on the signal boat, the courses are as follows:

Course 1: S/F - PP -R”2” - N - R”2” - PP - S/F (9.5 nm)

Course 2: S/F - GT - PP - R”2” - N -R”2” - PP - S/F(11.4 nm)

Course 3: S/F - GT - NR - N – R”2” - PP - S/F (14.3 nm)

Sunday boats use the same starting line and proceed southwesterly leaving GT to starboard, then to a finish line between G”7” and a committee boat to the south of it.

Sunday: Start - GT – Finish

On Sunday if you start on time, and the finish boat is not on station, take your own GPS finish time when G”7” is close aboard to starboard. Report your time to the RC.

10TIME LIMIT

10.1The time limit for the first boat to finish on Saturday will be 4 hours.

10.2Boats still racing 30 minutes after the first boat sails the proper course and finishes, and not thereafter retiring, will be scored TLE (Time Limit Expired) without a hearing.

10.3A boat starting more than 10 minutes after her starting signal will be scored Did Not Start without a hearing. This changes rule 63.1.

11PROTESTS AND REQUESTS FOR REDRESS

11.1A boat intending to protest notify the boat being protested immediately if possible, and shall report to the race committee on the RC signal boat as soon as possible after finishing, giving the race committee its sail number and the sail number(s) of the protested boat(s).

11.2Protest/Redress forms will be available on the official notice board.

11.3Written protestsmust be filed with the race officials at the Late Registration desk within 1 hour after the signal boat has docked for the day. Upon docking, the signal boat will sound a long horn to signify the start of this protest submission time limit. The time of docking will also be posted on the official notice board.

11.4Requests for redress shall be filed in accordance with rule 62.2.

12SCORING

Boats will be scored in the order in which they cross the finish line.

13PRIZES

Trophies for the will be awarded under the River Dunes tent at 1700on Saturday.

14DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See rule 4, Decision to Race. Neither the organizing authority nor the race committee will accept any liability for material damage, personal injury, or death in conjunction with, prior to, during, or after the regatta.
