Mass Book Yr. A Part 1 pg.155onwards
I THINK BEING LATE AT MASS IS VERY SERIOUS:
You must have heard about the five girls who were locked out of the party. This party was on their minds, new dresses had been boughtand hair had been carefully curled. This wedding was the talk of the village, missing it would be unthinkable. Preparations involved taking personal lanterns and in case of any eventuality some girls also took extra oil.
Things did not go according to plan, the bridegroom delayed, many dozed off while other guests decided to go about on the streets and in the shops to buy some provisions. The bridegroom turned up unnoticed and there was a loud cry “the bridegroom is here, please go and meet him” all those present went to meet him at the gate and the door was closed! I understand that those who were not patient enough to wait heard the cry too from a distance, they rushed back to the party but they found the gate already closed! “Lord open the door for us” but the bridegroom even denied that he knew them! Such is the seriousness of being late.
A good number of you have spoken to me about the distractions they get when someone is late. Alatecomer is person who joins a group session, after the session has started. In some establishments latecomers may not be attended to once the session has begun which means that all participants must be accounted for before the moderator initiates the session. Take the example of persons going for job interviews or for examinations, when they turn up late, it is a sure sign that they will fail. Think too of a traveler who turns up when the aircraft is already on the run way ready to fly, once he/she has missed it, that is it!
One of the serious habits that some of us might need to work on during Lent is being late on many occasions especially at Sunday Mass. Remember again the illustration above, the five girls were late, the door was closed, the party was missed and the bridegroom denied that he knew them even though they had been invited! Lenten season is a good opportunity to improve on our Christian spontaneity. At the Sunday Mass, Jesus prepares a party for us and makes us his special invited guests. Habitual lateness is a great show of disrespect to the Host –Jesus the Lord.
Is any parishioner sick or in hospital? Please inform the Parish Priest or one of the Sisters. It is important that Catholics on admission to hospital tell their religion to be recorded and request a visit from the Catholic Chaplain.
