Annual Report 2017-2018

“[T]he Third Vice-President shall be the chairman of the Maryland 400 Patriots’ Fund Board of Trustees and shall coordinate Society observances, ceremonies, and entertainment, and will serve as the liaison for and visit the following chapters during his term – John Paul Jones, Col. Tench Tilghman, John Hanson, Capt. John Smoot, and Thomas Stone. The Vice-Presidents shall also perform such additional duties as requested by the President.”

Since being installed as Third Vice President in April 2017, at the MDSSAR Annual Meeting at the Annapolis Waterfront Hotel, I have been engaged in the following activities:

Attended Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapter’s 97th Annual Meeting, Dutch’s Daughter Restaurant, Frederick, April 20, 2017.

Participated in eleven teleconference calls regarding the Patriots’ Ball 2017, in April, May, June, August, October, November, and December 2017. Attended a food tasting meeting at Turf Valley Resort, Ellicott City, June 9, 2017. Drafted program for the ball.

Served as a judge for MDSSAR Poster Contest, May 2017.

Attended and delivered remarks at Memorial Day Observance coordinated by the General William Smallwood Chapter at Veterans Park, Bethesda, May 29, 2017.

Submitted articles for the MDSSAR newsletter, The Old Line State Herald, May,August, Septemberand December, 2017 editions. Reviewed articles for submission to SARMagazine.

Presided at quarterly dinner meeting of the General William Smallwood Chapter, Rosensteel Knights of Columbus, Silver Spring, June 1, 2017.

Participated in three MDSSAR Executive Planning and Oversite Committee teleconferences on June 22, August 24, and August 30, 2017. Reviewed requests for funding.

Attended MDSSAR Board of Managers’ Meeting, Dutch’s Daughter Restaurant, Frederick, June 24, 2017.

Attended the 127th Sons of the American Revolution Congress, Knoxville, Tennessee, July 6-12, 2017. Also attended the Atlantic Middle States District Breakfast held during the Congress.

Led MDSSAR bus trip to New York to commemorate the 241st anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn, August 20, 2017. Activities included Maryland 400th Remembrance Ceremony and luncheon at Old Stone House, and MDSSAR wreath laying at Maryland Monument in Prospect Park. Coordinated transportation, meals, and ceremonies with partner groups.

Attended the funeral of Mrs. Eleanor Smallwood Beasley Niebell, DAR and CAR leader and recipient of the SAR Gold Good Citizenship Medal, Joseph Gawler’s Sons Funeral Home, Washington, D.C., September 1, 2017

Presided at quarterly dinner meeting of the General William Smallwood Chapter, Rosensteel Knights of Columbus, Silver Spring, September 7, 2017. The meeting included the presentation of SAR Public Safety Awards to three local first responders.

Attended SAR Fall Leadership Meetings, Brown Hotel, Louisville, Kentucky, September 28-30, 2017, including Museum Board meeting and Trustees’ meeting.

Presided at quarterly dinner meeting of the General William Smallwood Chapter, Rosensteel Knights of Columbus, Silver Spring, December 7, 2017.

Attended 56th Annual Patriots’ Ball, assisting with receiving line and promenade, and served with the MDSSAR Color Guard, Turf Valley Resort, Ellicott City, December 16, 2017.

Served on MDSSAR By-Laws Committee, including reviewing and providing comments for suggestion revisions to the by-laws, December 2017 and February 2018.

Attended John Hanson Chapter meeting, assisting with presentations of awards and inductions of new members, Mama Stella’s Ristorante Italiano, Clinton, December 28, 2017.

Attended MDSSAR Board of Managers’ Meeting, Maryland Club, Baltimore, January 6, 2018.

Led Executive Committee teleconference on February 16, 2018, regarding the acquisition of General William Smallwood’s papers.

Directed arrangements for the annual George Washington Luncheon, February 17, 2018, at Eagle’s Nest Country Club. Invited speaker Susan Finta of the National Park Service, and coordinated with chairmen of the Medals & Awards, Boy Scouts, and Fundraising committees. Coordinated issuance of Maryland 400 Honorary Regiment Medals with the Treasurer and 1st Vice President. Negotiated contract with the club and conducted two on-site meetings before the event.
