2016 Announcement For Nominations

Nominations are currently being accepted by the Maryland Correctional Administrators Association (MCAA) for the Community Service Awards Program (CSAP). The awards will be presented to the award recipients at a luncheon ceremony to be held at the Turf Valley Conference Center that is located at Turf Valley Road, Ellicott City, Maryland on March 14, 2017.

Nominations must be received by 5:00 pm on Friday, January 27, 2017. Nominations are to be e-mailed to George Hardinger, MCAA SCAP Chair at . The subject line must read: Nomination, MCAA SCAP.

ELIGIBILITY

Any correctional employee of the state, local jurisdiction or organizational unit who has voluntarily provided outstanding community service to improve the quality of life for the residents of their local community, the region, the state, or internationally can be nominated.

Any correctional employee of a state or local correctional facility or agency may nominate an individual, group of individuals, or a facility/organizational unit for an award.

NOMINATION INSTRUCTIONS

The following instructions for submitting a nomination must be followed.

Ø  For a nominee to be considered, the nomination form must be filled out completely and properly signed by the primary person submitting the nomination.

Ø  Nominations must provide brief but adequate details describing the nominee’s involvement and focus on their successful volunteer efforts, contributions and accomplishments.

Ø  Nomination must be received by 5 p.m., Friday, January 27, 2017.

JUDGING CRITERIA

The following criteria will be used to evaluate correctional employee, group of correctional employees, or a correctional organizational unit that:

Ø  Has participated in volunteer community service that has provided a significant benefit to the local community, region, State, or internationally. A list of examples are available as part of the nominating instructions.

Ø  Demonstrated an unusual level of commitment, initiative, innovation and/or leadership.

Ø  Volunteered for an extended period of time or provided an unusual number of hours, or donated special resources or talents.

Ø  Has served in a truly outstanding or unusual manner.

Ø  Has overcome obstacles to achieve the outcomes of their volunteer service.

Nomination Form

I. Please provide the name of the correctional employee(s) or organizational unit being nominated. If applicable please attach a list of individuals comprising the group or a list of participants from the organizational unit.

II. Please provide the name and a very brief description of the community service agency, program or activity that has benefitted from the efforts of the correctional employee volunteer or volunteers being nominated.

III. Nomination Narrative: This information must be no more than two (2) pages, single-spaced on 8 ½ x 11 paper with one-inch margins and typed in 12-point font. The narrative must answer the following questions:

A.  What service did the nominee provide for the agency, organization or activity for which they volunteered? Include a description of the population or group served (e.g., youth, seniors, disadvantaged, disabled, veterans, etc,). If applicable, provide the approximate number of hours per week or month.

B.  What benefits or achievements can be cited as the direct result of the nominee’s volunteer service to the respective group or community? For example, describe the services provided and how the agency, program or activity directly benefitted from the nominees efforts or contributions.

C.  Did the nominee provide unique, innovative or unusual approaches for addressing community needs or problems? If so, briefly explain why the service is considered unique, innovative or unusual.

D.  Has the nominee overcome any unique challenges or obstacles to engage in the activity or to provide the service?

E.  Please explain the primary reason for nominating this employee(s). Please focus on the service for the past year (2013) – except for lifetime achievement nominees. For example, explain how the volunteer service demonstrates an unusual level of commitment or dedication, is truly unique, or otherwise warrants special recognition.

F.  Please provide any additional information that helps document that the efforts of the correctional employee, group of employees or organizational unit proved directly beneficial to a community service program or activity.

The nomination must include the signature of the correctional employee submitting the nomination. If a group is submitting the nomination only one signature is required.
