Exemplar Generic Marking criteria – (M-level and Level-5 assignments) PGCE (PCE)
PCE assignments are marked on a strictly pass/fail basis. The criteria exemplify the quality of work that is consistent with four grade boundaries, with tutor comments that might be used to reflect student achievement.
Very good Pass
- Work of an excellent standard;
- very clearly reasoned explanation of choices, supported by wide and analytical reading, with reference made to subject pedagogical issues and literature, and wider theoretical approaches to teaching and learning;
- systematic and clearly articulated conceptual understanding of knowledge in subject discipline including disciplinary methodologies in relation to own work;
- ability to work both autonomously with a minimum of guidance, and as a leader as required;
- demonstrates full use of learning resources appropriate to task
- ability to very clearly describe how personal thinking has changed, with very high-quality critical reflection and synthesis;
- ability to manage the implications of ethical dilemmas and issues;
- excellent, accurate literacy with fluent and lucid writing;
- work presented clearly and logically with all assignment requirements met.
Good Pass
- Work of a good standard;
- reasoned explanation of choices, supported by analytical reading, with reference made to subject pedagogical issues including theoretical approaches to teaching and learning;
- conceptual understanding of main areas of knowledge in subject discipline, including awareness of disciplinary methodology in relation to own work;
- capacity to work autonomously and as a leader as required;
- demonstrates use of learning resources appropriate to task;
- ability to describe how personal thinking has changed, with critical reflection and synthesis;
- awareness of the implications of the main ethical dilemmas and issues;
- good, accurate literacy with fluent and lucid writing;
- work presented clearly and logically with most of the assignment requirements met.
Pass
- Work of an acceptable standard;
- explanation of the choice of areas made, supported by analytical reading, demonstration of awareness of subject pedagogical issues;
- conceptual understanding of main areas of knowledge in subject discipline, including awareness of disciplinary methodology in relation to own work;
- demonstration of capacity to work autonomously with indication of ability to lead;
- demonstrates use of some learning resources appropriate to task;
- able to describe how personal thinking has changed, with some elements of critical reflection and synthesis;
- awareness of the implications of some of the ethical dilemmas and issues;
- adequate, standard of literacy with fluent and lucid writing;
- satisfactory presentation of work with few of the assignment requirements missing.
Fail
- Work of an unacceptable standard;
- little explanation of the choice of areas made, supported by little of no analytical reading, with little demonstration of awareness of subject pedagogical issues;
- lack of conceptual understanding of main areas of knowledge in subject discipline, including disciplinary methodology in relation to own work;
- little evidence of capacity to work autonomously or of ability to lead;
- little use of learning resources appropriate to task;
- poor description of how personal thinking has changed, with few or no elements of critical reflection and synthesis;
- lack of awareness of the implications of some of the ethical dilemmas and issues;
- poor or inadequate, standard of literacy with fluent and lucid writing;
- unsatisfactory presentation of work meeting few of the assignment requirements.
