Parent Involvement Policy

Part I: General Expectations

Marina del Rey Middle School and Performing Arts Magnet’s administrative staff and faculty recognize the importance and value of quality parental involvement and its positive effect on student achievement. Parents will be encouraged to participate in regularly scheduled, meaningful communication with the school staff concerning student academic achievement, school activities and school policies in order to promote a positive learning environment where all students can achieve.

Marina del Rey Middle School and Performing Arts Magnet will:

  • Develop with parents and distribute to parents a School Parental InvolvementPolicy that the school staff and parents of participating children agree on.
  • Notify parents about the School Involvement Policy in a language the parents understand.
  • Make the Policy available to the local community
  • Update the Policy as needed to meet the changing needs of the parents and school
  • Adopt a school-parent compact as part of the Policy
  • Be governed by the statutory definition of parental involvement as described in section 1118 of the ESEA that parents play an integral role in their child’s learning; parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s education; parents are full partners in their child’s education and should assume appropriate rolls on advisory committees.

Part II: Development and Implementation of School Parental Involvement Policy

  1. Marina del Rey Middle School and Performing Arts Magnet will take the following actions to involve parents in the joint development and joint agreement of its School Involvement Policy:
  2. Establish a team of school staff and parents to organize, implement and assign responsibilities to accomplish the implementation of a Parental Involvement Policy
  • Make available to parents the District policy for parent involvement and the Marina del Rey School-Parent Compact
  • Notify parents of a school wide Title I meeting to inform parents about Title I participation and gather parental input for the development of a local school Parental Involvement Policy
  • Conduct Advisory Council meetings to review collected material and to develop a Parental Involvement Policy to be distributed to parents of participating students.
  1. Marina del Rey Middle School and Performing Arts Magnet will mail/send a copy of the approved Parent Involvement Policy to the homes of all participating students and publish the Policy for the local community.
  1. Marina del Rey Middle School and Performing Arts Magnet will hold monthly School Site Council meetings to periodically review and update the Policy and to inform parents about educational options and services available to their children.
  1. Marina del Rey Middle School and Performing Arts Magnet will convene an annual meeting to inform parents of and to distribute the following items:
  • Marina del Rey’s participation in Title I
  • their rights to be involved in their child’s educational process
  • the Parental Involvement Policy and the school-parent compact
  • all appropriate Title I Parent Notices, regulations and codes that relate to Title I in a clear and uniform format.
  • Convenient times and constructive activities for parent involvement will be determined by reviewing surveys sent home. Appropriate notices will be developed by the Title I coordinator.
  1. Marina del Rey Middle School and Performing Arts Magnet will provide multiple opportunities for parent education and involvement. Among the services and programs provided are the Parent Institute for Quality Education, School Advisory Councils, Parent Conference Nights, school entertainment events, computer education, literacy, math and technology events, student showcases, etc. Parents will be informed of these activities by phone, by mail or by a flyer sent home with the student. Babysitting, transportation or other services necessary to insure parent support will be available as appropriate.
  1. Marina del Rey Middle School and Performing Arts Magnet will provide information about Title I programs to parents of participating children in a timely manner by creating a calendar of events, sending the calendar to all parents and sending appropriate notices and reminders to parents regarding upcoming events in compliance with all Title I regulations and codes.
  1. Marina del Rey Middle School and Performing Arts Magnet will hold regular Local School Leadership Council, School Site Council, and ELAC meetings to provide parents with a description and explanation of the curriculum in use at the school, the form of academic assessment used to measure student progress and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet. Selected administrators and counselors will make these presentations to the parents.
  1. Marina del Rey Middle School and Performing Arts Magnet will hold regular meetings of the councils noted in item #7 to give parents an opportunity to participate in the decision making process that sets policy relating to the education of their children.
  1. Marina del Rey Middle School and Performing Arts Magnet agrees to submit to the district any parent comments if the school wide plan under section (1114)(b)(2) is not satisfactory to the parents of participating students. A complaint form will be issued for the parent to complete, two copies will be made-one for the parent, one for the school-the original complaint will be sent to the appropriate district office. The complaint will be discussed at the School Site Council meeting in an attempt to find consensus for an acceptable resolution.

Part III: Shared Responsibilities for high Student Academic Achievement

Marina del Rey Middle School and Performing Arts Magnet will build the school’s and parent’s capacity for strong parental and community involvement in an effort to improve student academic achievement by perhaps providing the following:

the Parent Action Committee Team that will assist with implementing plans for the improvement of MDR.

VeniceAdultSchool, a program which provides computers and technology training for parents

Local community business people and parents conduct workshops for students regarding career exploration and educational preparation for the job market.

High School and College Fairs, local high school and college personnel present workshops for parent and students regarding requirements for graduation and college preparation

Marina del Rey Middle School and Performing Arts Magnet will incorporate the school-parent compact as part of its involvement policy by……….

  • Posting the Compact on the school website
  • Distributing the Compact through homeroom for parent–student signatures

Marina del Rey Middle School and Performing Arts Magnet will, with the assistance of its district, provide assistance to parents of participating students in understanding the school system and how to foster their child’s academic success by providing the following activities or supplying the following information:

sending parents to district workshops and/or conferences such as the California League ofMiddle Schools Conference which present materials on State content standards, achievement standards, State assessment tools, Title I requirements, how to monitor their child’s progress and how to work with educators.

Providing technology training to parents and classes on how to foster success in school as offered by:ESC-West,VeniceAdult School, and/orThe Parent Institute for Quality Education.

  • Offering professional development which educates teachers and staff in how to work with parents as equal partners in their child’s education as determined by Local School Leadership Council.
  • Planning programs which build ties between the parent and the school (see list of activities in the ParentCenter)
  • Providing all school information relating to parent and student activities to participating students’ homes in a formand in the parent’s primary language.

IV. Adoption

This Parental Involvement Policy has been developed jointly with, and agreed on with, parents of children participating in Title I Parent A programs, as evidenced by agendas and minutes of Marina del Rey Middle School’s governing councils and advisory committees available upon request.

This policy was adopted by Marina del Rey Middle School and Performing Arts Magnet on October 21, 2015 and will remain in effect as written, subject to annual review. The school will distribute this policy to all parents of Title I students on or before November 30 of the current school year. It will be made available to the local community on or before November 30, of the current school year. Marina del Rey Middle School and Performing Arts Magnet’s notification to parents of this policy will be in a uniform format and, to the extent practicable, provide a copy of this policy to parents in a language the parents can understand.
