Medical Emergency

● This EAP is to be followed in the event that EMS needs to be activated for care of an injured athlete, staff, coach or spectator at a Grand Island Rugby Club event including games and practices.

AED (Automated External Defibrillators) Locations:

Grand Island High School - In wall AEDs are located in the Viking Mall next to Casey’s Corner Store, outside the back gym door near the weight room, and near the main entrance of the Middle School.

Kaegebein Elementary School - The portable AED will be obtainable for pickup from the main office located directly on the left hand side when entering the main entrance. The AED will be picked up in the main office before practice by a prearranged team member and dropped off after practice each day.

Sidway Elementary School - When playing at Sidway, Grand Island Rugby will have access to an AED through the Grand Island Fire Department and EMT as well as the trainer on staff.

Team EAP

● The Grand Island Rugby Club will arrange three team members who in the event of an emergency or injury, will contact the EMS, obtain an AED if necessary and provide support to those individuals through the direction of the coaching staff. This is updated each year for each team at each level.

● These individuals will also meet EMS members upon their arrival at the location stated below dependent on the location of the practice or match.

● On game days a trainer will be on the premises as well as an ambulance. Specified team members will be required to obtain assistance from EMS or a trainer if necessary.

EMS

● The prefered location for EMS entry to the building for the High School is through Door 21 located next to the loading dock at the southern end of the Viking Mall. For the Middle School, EMS is to be directed through the main entrance of the Middle School.

● The prefered location for EMS entry to the practice field at Kaegebein Elementary School is to enter via Broadway on the southwest side of the property. The practice field is located parallel with South Parkway between Kaegebein Elementary and Broadway.

● The prefered location for EMS entry to the match field at Sidway Elementary School is via the main entrance off of Baseline Road at the south end of the property between the school and the neighboring US Post Office. The EMS Will then travel behind the school, making a left to travel north towards the match pitch.

○ For the upcoming 2016 season, there is an alternative entrance to the north of the school and the pitch, a temporary service road which can also be used as a viable entrance in case of emergency. The EMS will need to make a right, heading south off of the service road in order to reach the field which is located between the service road and the school.

Venue Specific EAP

Grand Island High School

● Athletic Trainer Room - EMS is to be directed to enter the complex via Door 21, located off Driveway 5 in the South Parking lot, pass through the back hallway, make a right hand turn, and the training office is on the left hand side.

● Main Gym - EMS is to be directed to enter via Door 21 located near the loading dock of the HS, and the South end of the Viking Mall.

● Back Gym - EMS is to be directed to enter via Door 27, located in the rear parking lot behind the HS

● Upstairs Gym (Wrestling Gym) - EMS is to be directed to enter via Door 21 located near the loading dock of the HS, and the South End of the Viking Mall

Grand Island Middle School

Gym/Upstairs Gym - EMS is to be directed to enter the complex via Driveway 1, and enter the building through the middle school main entrance. They will be met there by a member of the coaching staff or an appointed athlete.

Sidway Elementary School

● Match Field - EMS is to enter the complex at the main entrance off of Baseline Road at the south end of the property between the school and the neighboring US Post Office. EMS should turn left to go behind the school and then head north towards the field. EMS can drive as close to the incident as possible, and coaches and appointed athletes will help direct EMS to the location of the incident.

Fire Emergency

● In the event of a fire emergency, pull the nearest fire alarm and evacuate the building via the nearest exit. Wait outside until GIFD allows entry back into the building.

Weather Emergency

● Lightning Emergency - If lightning is observed or thunder heard, outdoor athletic fields will be cleared of all athletes, staff, and spectators for at least 30 minutes from the last lightning strike or sound of thunder.

Chemical Spill/Structural Emergency

● Contact custodial on staff via cell phone at 773-8814 or 8814 from a school land line. Call will go to custodian on staff. Please list the location of spill/damage.

Game Day Medical Plan

There will be one (1) ambulance at the facility prior to game time until the end of all matches. There will be at least one EMT accompanying the ambulance with radio band contact. In addition, there will be one trainor at each game who will tape and prepare players for the game. This trainer will have ice, water, tape and chairs and will assist both teams in times of injury.

In case of an injury, the procedure will be:

If an injury occurs during warm ups or outside of a scheduled game the athlete should report to the trainer of EMT for assistance. The first medical staff to the scene will conduct a primary on-field assessment. If the injury is not serious the medical staff will bring the athlete to the sidelines and conduct a secondary assessment. If the injury is serious, the games trainer and EMT will take the field and assist, They will inspect the athlete and determine if the ambulance is needed for transport for the athlete or by private vehicles (with family or friend) if an ambulance ride is declined. All major treatment or injuries will be recorded in a medical report by the medical staff that administered treatment. The medical director will collect the reports at the end of each day of competition.

If there is a dispute over the medical care of an athlete this must be brought to the attention of the medical and the incident will be recorded in writing. Situations such as this will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
