Emergency Action Plan

{updated as of 02/03/03 }

The following emergency plan is a general outline for the University of Central Florida’s Athletics Department. Specific emergency plans for each individual sport and/or athletic facility detailing emergency phone numbers, entrances and access routes, emergency phone locations, etc. are available in each athletic training room and can be found in the Appendix of this manual. It is expected that every full-time staff, graduate assistant, and athletic training student will make themselves 100% knowledgeable about all facets of the Emergency Action Plan.

Emergency Communication Hand Signals-

  • “touch body part”-indicates the injured body part
  • “raised fist”-ATC / MD is needed;
  • “scuba OK” (pat top of head)-ATC / MD is not needed;
  • “overhead circular”-activate EMS immediately
  • “baseball safe signal”-spineboard / stretcher is needed;
  • “hand pumping motion”-splints are needed;
  • “steering wheel motion”-cart / motorized transportation is needed;
  • “fist pound on heart”-automated external defibrillator (AED) is needed;

Cardiorespiratory, Medical, and/or Orthopedic Emergency occurring at a

HOME game and/or practice session-

  1. A UCF certified athletic trainer and other appropriate personnel will go onto the field / court to evaluate the student-athlete, administer basic life support (BLS), and stabilize the student-athlete until EMS arrives.
  • If the injury is a suspected football cervical spine injury, in-line head and shoulder stabilization will be maintained while the facemask and/or helmet and shoulder pads are removed as indicated using standard protocols.
  • If the injury is a suspected non-football cervical spine injury, a UCF certified athletic trainer will maintain in-line head and shoulder stabilization as per standard protocols.
  • The student-athlete will be placed on a spine board using standard protocols.
  • If the injury is a suspected cardio-respiratory emergency, a UCF athletic trainer and/or other appropriate personnel will retrieve, set-up, and use the automated external defibrillator (if available) as per standard protocols.
  1. A UCF athletic trainer will give the appropriate hand signals to the sidelines and/or will notify game management personnel of the emergency situation (if applicable).
  1. Game management personnel, a UCF athletic trainer, a member of the coaching staff, and/or other personnel will immediately use the closest available device to call EMS (911 from a non-campus phone; 7-911 from a campus phone) and direct them to the appropriate location.
  • If a cellular phone is not available, the designated individual should proceed to the nearest pay phone and/or campus phone to access EMS.
  1. After activating EMS, the designated individual should call the following persons to notify them of the emergency situation and request that an AED be immediately brought to the emergency location (if applicable)-

a)UCF Public Safety (3-5555 from a campus phone or 407-823-5555 from a non-campus phone);

b)Wayne Densch Sports Center Athletic Training Room (3-2030 / 3-2103 / 3-4955 from a campus phone or 407-823-2030 / 407-823-2103 / 407-823-4955 from a non-campus phone); and

c)Team Physician (if applicable).

  1. The team physician (if available) and designated UCF athletic trainers will continue to provide treatment / stabilization as needed and/or required.
  1. Game management personnel (if applicable), designated UCF athletic trainers, members of the coaching staff, and/or other personnel will proceed to pre-determined locations to wait for EMS, direct them to the proper location, and guide them onto the field / court.
  2. Game management personnel (if applicable), remaining UCF athletic trainers, members of the coaching staff, and/or other personnel will assist with crowd control and securing an unobstructed and safe passageway for EMS personnel.
  3. A UCF athletic trainer and/or a member of the UCF Athletics Department will accompany the injured student-athlete to the medical facility with the injured student-athlete’s emergency medical information.
  4. Once at the medical facility, the designated individual will call back to the WDSC Athletic Training Room (407-823-2030 / 407-823-2103 / 407-823-4955) and/or to the UCF certified athletic trainer’s cellular phone with any medical updates.
  1. If the AED unit is used-

a)Contact Jennifer Perez, AED Liaison, at 407-823-4955 to notify her of the emergency situation and AED use.

a)The AED should be turned off unless it is immediately needed for an additional incident and should be immediately delivered to the AED Liaison in the WDSC Athletic Training Room.

Cardiorespiratory, Medical, and/or Orthopedic Emergency occurring at an

AWAY game and/or practice session-

  1. A UCF certified athletic trainer and other appropriate personnel will go onto the field / court to evaluate the student-athlete, administer basic life support (BLS), and stabilize the student-athlete until EMS arrives.
  • If the injury is a suspected football cervical spine injury, in-line head and shoulder stabilization will be maintained while the facemask and/or helmet and shoulder pads are removed as indicated using standard protocols.
  • If the injury is a suspected non-football cervical spine injury, a UCF certified athletic trainer will maintain in-line head and shoulder stabilization using standard protocols.
  • The student-athlete will be placed on a spine board using standard protocols.
  1. A UCF athletic trainer will give the appropriate hand signals to the sidelines, and will notify the host certified athletic trainer and/or game management personnel (if applicable).
  2. UCF athletic trainers, the team physician (if applicable), and the host certified athletic trainer will continue to administer BLS and stabilize the student-athlete as best possible while following the host institution’s emergency protocols.
  3. A member of the UCF athletic training staff, a member of the coaching staff, and/or other personnelwillaccompany the injured student-athlete to the medical facility with the injured student-athlete’s emergency medical information.
  4. Once at the medical facility, the designated individual will immediately call the Wayne Densch Sports Center Athletic Training Room (407-823-2030 / 407-823-2103 / 407-823-4955) and/or the UCF Head Athletic Trainer (407-625-9907) to notify the appropriate personnel about the emergency situation. The designated individual will also call the UCF certified athletic trainer’s cellular phone and/or the host institution’s athletic training room with any medical updates.
