Dear Reed Parents,

The Science Fair is coming!!!! The Science Fair is a wonderful opportunity for your child to put his/her scientific process skills to work, be creative and explore the world around him/her! Participation in the Science Fair is optional. Your child can choose to do his/her own personal project or may work with a partner or small group of no more than 3 people to complete a project. Who knows what budding scientists, engineers or doctors we have among us! More information related to winning projects is listed on the back of this letter.

If you would like your child to participate in this year’s Science Fair, please fill out the bottom portion of this letter and return it to your child’s teacher. Turning in the permission slip will confirm that your child will commit to completing a project for the Science Fair.If you visit Hinsen’s faculty website) there is a Science Fair Handbookavailable that includessafety rules, tips about the display boards, general information about doing a project. You will also find helpful links and additional Science Fair information. The information in the Science Fair Handbook is meant to guide you through the process of creating an award-winning Science Fair project. Please read the rules carefully, to ensure that your child’s project is meeting regulations.If you should have questions regarding regulations,please email me anytime at se indicate below if you need a hard copy of the Science Fair Handbook sent home or if you will print one at home.

This year projects are due on Monday, December 5th.Judging will be Wednesday, December 7th, Parent Viewing day is Thursday, December 8th, and all projects must be taken home Friday, December 9th. The Science Fair is an educational opportunity your child should not miss and to reward those who put forth the hard work that goes into any science fair project, there will be a “Celebrating our Popping Projects” party. Our participating students will enjoy popcorn and a drink as they celebrate all they have accomplished.

Reed Science Fair:

  • All students in grades K through 6 may enter a building science fair.
  • Each grade level may award honorable mention, 3rd place, 2nd place, and 1st place ribbons.
  • One grand prize winner will be chosen from lower level (grades 1-3), one from intermediate level (grades 4-5), and one from 6th grade. There will be a total of 3 grand prizes per campus.
  • No ties for first place or Grand Prize are allowed.
  • All decisions of the judges are final.

North Dallas Regional Science Fair

  • Grand Prize winners from the Reed Science Fair will go on to compete in the Regional Science Fair. There will be a total of 3 grand prizes per campus. Kindergarten may not compete beyond the campus fair.
  • Students may make improvements on their projects before District and Regional competition.
  • All Grand Prize projects must be categorized on the registration form (Dr. Hinsen will fill out the registration form for the winners). Elementary exhibits are to be entered by the following categories:
  • Life Science- testing or having an effect on a living organism
  • Earth Science- testing or having an effect on naturally occurring land, water, or air
  • Physical Science- testing or having an effect on natural or man-made materials
  • Engineering- solving a problem by developing or improving a technology
  • All decisions of the judges are final.
