Results of Manitoba bred Restricted Stakes & Allowance Races

Golden Stripe, by El Corredor out of Terra Cotte by Rare Brick, was the wire to wire winner of the $50,000 R C Anderson (MB bred 3 year old fillies). She is bred/owned by K 5 Stables, trained by Emile Corbel and ridden by Rohan Singh. Bound to Thrill came in second with Glory Command 3rd.

Mr. Dick Bonnycastle breeder of Manitoba bred Gold Strike (winner of the 2005 3 year old filly Sovereign Award) provided funding for a race restricted to 3 year old Manitoba bred, Manitoba sired who are out of Manitoba resident mares. This race (2 divisions) was named the Gold Strike Mile. Winners in 2009 were

  • Percolating, by Circulating out of Pieces of April by Alfaari, won the colt/gelding division. He was bred by Franklin Johnson, owned by A-Z Stable, trained by Chad Torvell and ridden by Rohan Singh. Cindy’s Last Trick was 2nd and Rye’n Coke Press rounded out the top 3.
  • Bixette bred, owned and trained by Guy Kling and ridden by Alan Cuthbertson was the impressive winner of the filly division. She is by Bixby Knolls out of Sampaquette by Sunbury. Premier Star was second with Too Hot Cat finishing 3rd.

New Manitoba bred allowance races were held for 3 and up as preps for the Distaff andAgassiz and were restricted to non winners of $10,800 once in 2009.

  • Easters Lily bred by Wayne Elias and Brian Billeck, owned by Wayne Elias and Brian and Arlene Billeck, trained by Wayne Elias and ridden by Carlos Marquez won the filly/mare division. She is by His Excellence out of Nasty Millie by Bashful Cloud. Simple Intentions and Thunder Sky were 2nd and 3rd respectively.
  • Brinello, by Out of Place out of Classic Beth by Regal Classic, won the male division. He is bred/owned by Dr. Ross A. McKague, trained by Carl Anderson with regular jockey Mark Anderson aboard for the win. Spying Eyes came in 2nd with Eight by Ten in 3rd.

Allowance races were carded for 3 and 4 year old Manitoba breds who were non winners of $10,800 once in 2009. Unfortunately, the colts/geldings division did not fill.

  • Gold Medal Stable and Dennis Mitchell’s Simple Intentions with jockey Vicky Baze aboard captured the filly division. The Regal Intention filly (out of Cymru by Highland Ruckus) was bred by Tri Venture Thoroughbreds and is trained by Carl Anderson. It was Queen Tina for the place with Floating Sky in 3rd.

Seven year old Brinello, by Out of Place out of Classic Beth by Regal Classic, was greeted in the win circle by owner/breeder Dr. Ross A McKague, trainer Carl Anderson and rider Mark Anderson when he captured the Agassiz Stakes for the third year in a row. Spying Eyes was second while Eight by Ten finished third.

Eight year old mare Thunder Sky, by Dargai out of Running Feathers by Balderson rallied to win the Distaff for the 3rd time (also won in 2006 & 2007). Sidygin Stables purchased her in the local yearling sale for $2300 from breeder Graham McKenzie, she is trained by Curtis Maxwell and was ridden to victory by Alan Cuthbertson. Queen Tina was second while Golden Stripe was third.

Interesting to note that Brinello’s life time earnings surpassed $200,000 while Thunder Sky broke the $100,000 mark with their victories. They are both well known and well loved campaigners at Assiniboia Downs.

The CTHS Sales Stake for 2 year olds Manitoba division Sales grads saw a thrilling stretch run when Applicant, by Where’s The Ring out of Rondinella by War Deputy nipped pace setter Mt. Charles by a neck at the wire. Battle Advance was third. Applicant was purchased for $800 by Right Attitude and Partners (Barry, Scott and Wayne Anderson, Don Bell, Bob Crockett and Harvey Warner) from breeder Lorna B. Short, is trained by Lorna Gray and was ridden by Larren Delorme.

Battle Advance, by Battle Cat out of What Four by Cognizant, bred by Kelly Halliday placed 3rd in the 2 year old North Dakota Stakes.

As of press time, 2 restricted stakes remain to be run this season

  • $50,000 J W Sifton Stake (1 1/8 mile 3 year old Manitoba bred colts/geldings) on September 18th
  • $50,000 Buffalo Stake (1 mile 2 year old Manitoba breds) on September 19th

CTHS Trainers Challenge

It was a hard fought battle going right to the end but Chad Torvell emerged as winner of the 2008/09 CTHS Trainers Challenge with 14,580 points. Emile Corbell and Carl Anderson tied for second with 13,770.

Chad “invested” his $2,000 sales credit by partnering with Barry Arnason and Cam Ziprick on yearlings purchased at the sale.

Points for next year’s challenge are already being accumulated
