Maji Puppy/Adult Care Suggestions

Bath:

1 to 2 times a month or when needed; I use Dawn dish soap as puppies because it is gentle on the coat plus if they would happen to get in contact with fleas the Dawn dish soap will kill them and the eggs until they are big enough for flea medicine/drops. Just remember it takes a good 4 to 5 hours for them to complete dry so keep them inside if it is cold outside.

Ears:

Clean once a week. You can put some drops in their ears and let soak for a few minutes. I use some Ear Mite & Tick Control solution. Squish the ear around some and then use a cotton ball or Q-tip and clean it all out to remove the dirt. If brownish colored wax is inside take to vet to check for ear infection. You can do this while they are soaking in the bath.

Nails:

Trip toe nails about once a week or as needed. Trim to quik and then you can use an emery board to file the rest if needed.

Nose:

If it gets dry you can soften with Vitamin E tablets or I found Vitamin E in a bottle that you can use as well.

Creases:

Use cotton ball and Dial Antibacterial soap to clean creases between the nose and eyes. Do not get into the eye and then dry out the creases good. You can also find some tear drop removal pads to use as well.

Pad of Foot

Watch for dryness on the pads. You can apply the Vitamin E to these as well to help prevent dryness. You can also apply a topical spray on them if they show redness/rash. Genesis topical sprays are good.

Acne:

If breakout on chin happens, use Dial soap and let dry.

Water:

Always have fresh water available for them inside and outside. I recommend using stainless steel dishes.

Food Intake:

I use Iam’s Puppy Food or Hills Science Diet. All our adults consume 1 ¾ to 2 cups a day total.

Your puppies are all close to 5lbs right now so they should be getting a cup/day divided into 2 or 3 feedings per day depending on your schedule. 3 feeds right now is best until they get bigger.

Switching food type is totally up to you but I tend to do it just to give them something different. Just be careful of the dog food you select for them.

Potty Training:

I have been working on this for several weeks. They have puppy pads in their pen that they have been using. When I go to their room I let them out so they can go pee, then I feed them. Once they are done eating they need to go back out to poop. They will usually go twice so don’t rush them. Hanging a bell from the door knob where they can reach it is a good idea and I have several people that use this method.

Puppy Shot Schedule
Puppy vaccination or puppy shots is an important part of dog care. Many new pet owners are faced with a question "puppy shots - when to give?". Before we go to the schedule, let's see the names of the diseases against which your beloved pet needs to be vaccinated. Most of these diseases can be detrimental to dog health which is the reason for puppy shots schedule:

  • Hepatitis → Liver disease.
  • Distemper → Viral disease affecting brain, lungs and intestine
  • Parainfluenza → Infectious bronchitis
  • Leptospirosis → Urinary tract bacterial disease
  • Rabies → Fatal viral disease
  • Corona → Intestinal viral disease
  • Parvo-virus → Intestinal viral disease
  • Kennel Cough (Bordatella) → Bacterial infection affecting upper respiratory system

Puppy Shots Timeline

Age / Shot Name
6 to 8 weeks / 1st DHLPP* + Corona
11 to 12 weeks / 2nd DHLPP + Corona
15 to 16 weeks / 3rd DHLPP + Corona
After 4 months / Rabies
7 to 9 months / 1st Heartworm Test

*This vaccination is also known as five in one vaccine. It guards the puppy against Canine Distemper, Canine Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza and Parvo-virus.

De-worming:

A large majority of puppies are naturally born with worms so it is very important to stay on top of the de-worming process. By the time you get your puppy they will have had two rounds of wormer medicine; once at the 6 weeks check-up and then again at 8 weeks before they come to you. This will be indicated on their vet info sheet that you need to give to your vet so they know their history and when to give them their next round. We use the oral medicine.

*Note: We give our adult dogs Heartgard Plus every month if your vet should ask.
