TITLE: PLANT UTILITIES ENGINEER I DEPT: Physical Facilities

TRADE/SALARY RANGE: SG-14 $45,018 Number of Positions: 1

Shift: 3pm—11:30pm

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This Plant Utilities Engineer I position will be assigned to the field heating force. An assignment to the field heating force may involve the operation, maintenance, repair and alterations to any mechanical systems serving the University buildings. Typical assignments may include operating and installing the energy management system; maintaining water treatment for an open and closed-loop system; operating and troubleshooting gas fired satellite boilers; overhauling pumps and HVAC equipment; testing and repair of RPZs, and recommending and developing energy conservation projects. A Plant Utilities Engineer I may be responsible for the supervision of a small work force, including Assistant Plant Utilities Engineers, Maintenance Assistants, Plant Utilities Helpers. A Plant Utilities Engineer I may be required to perform any related tasks listed in the New York State Department of Civil Service Classification Standard. This position will work with the monitor board staff to handle repair & complaint issues during their shift This position will support HVAC functions for events

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Qualifications Include:

A. Competitive exam required.

B. An Associate Degree in Plant Utilities Technology or the equivalent. In order to determine whether a specific degree is equivalent to the Plant Utilities Technology program, the major course of study must include a minimum of 30 college semester credit hours in any combination of the following course areas:

- HVAC - Electrical Circuits - Boiler and Steam Systems

- Fluid Mechanics - Industrial Electricity - Electric Utility Systems

- Technical Communications - Plant Operation & Maintenance - Industrial Safety

- Thermal Dynamics - Utility Refrigeration Mechanics - Industrial Instrumentation & Control

- Physics - Environmental Air Quality - Blueprint Reading & Sketching

AND

One year of satisfactory hands on experience in the operation and maintenance of boilers and/or auxiliary equipment or HVAC equipment in commercial, industrial or institutional facilities. (Experience limited to residential applications is not considered qualifying.)

OR

C.  Four years of such experience and 30 college semester credit hours in any combination of the courses as listed in B. above.

SPECIAL INFORMATION: This position will require shift work. A valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in NYS is required for this position. This position will be labeled as essential and critical
