Guided Math 1st grade

M1M1. Students will compare and/or order the length, weight, or capacity of two or

more objects by using direct comparison or a nonstandard unit.

a. Directly compare length, weight, and capacity of concrete objects.

b. Estimate and measure using a non-standard unit that is smaller than the object

to be measured.

c. Measure with a tool by creating a “ruled” stick, tape, or container by marking

off ten segments of the repeated single unit.

Week 1

Whole Group Activity

b. Estimate and measure using a non-standard unit that is smaller than the object to be measured.

How many hands?

With recording sheet

Center #1

b. Estimate and measure using a non-standard unit that is smaller than the object to be measured.

How many scoops? (capacity)

Use the following containers:

Yogurt container

Big McDonald’s cup (or something along those lines)

Tupperware

Milk Carton

Use Dixie cups for the scooping

Use rice, sand or beans for the content.

b. Estimate and measure using a non-standard unit that is smaller than the object to be measured.

GroundHogsGarden

Cut the ladybugs and worms into individual pieces, then measure

With garden sheet, flower sheet and worm/ladybug sheet

Center #3

a. Directly compare length, weight, and capacity of concrete objects.

Hold and Compare

With data sheet to fill out

Center #4

b. Estimate and measure using a non-standard unit that is smaller than the object to be measured.

Which is bigger? Which is smaller?

Groundhog’s Garden

1) You will choose 5 flowers from the pile and measure the length of the flower using the measuring tools (worms or bugs) and record your findings.
2) Measure the flower length from thetop of the flower card to the bottom. (How many ladybugs or worms long are your flowers?)
3) Write your measurements on your Recording Sheet.
4) Then paste your flowers in an order that makes sense to you onto the Groundhog’s Garden Mat.
5) On the bottom of the garden tell why you decided to glue your flowers onto the mat like you did.

Measurement Matters

1)You must use the paperclips to measure

2)Choose 5 things to measure

3)Then estimate how long each item is

4)Then measure using the paperclips and write down

your results

5)Then answer questions at the bottom of the page

Which is Bigger? Which is Smaller?

1)Estimate how many cubes it will take to measure your hand, foot and arm?
2)Measure your body parts with the cubes and write down your answers.
3)Write about what you learned.

Hold and Compare

1) Choose 2 items to hold and compare

2) Predict which is heavier

3) Close your eyes and hold both items

4) Tell your partner “How you know the item is heavier?”

5) Write down your answers on the recording sheet

6) Circle the heavier item in BLUE and the lighter item in RED.
