Hereford and County Athletics Club

Newsletter - November 2017

The Cross Country season has started, with some good performances in the first two meetings. Indoor Sports Hall has also got going. Further details below

All members should be competing. This not only supports the Club, but you get to find out how much all that training has improved you.

On Saturday November 18th, the club held the ‘Club Awards Night‘ at Hereford Football Club. The committee had a very tough time deciding the winners, especially in the junior ladies categories. Full details of the winners, are on the ‘News Page’ of the Club website. The evening was well attended, with good food, music and fun. If there had been an award for top dancer, this would have certainly been awarded to Alfie Brookes, who really got the party started with some top moves.

The Club held a raffle that raised money for the ‘Children in Need’ appeal. There were some food plates that were piled high with ‘winter food’ followed by cake(s). It is time to get some hard track sessions in to work of the calories and get ready for upcoming events.

Team Captains

At the recent AGM, the captains for next season were elected. For Cross Country it is Eva Tyler Pat Morgan. The junior track and field captains are Darcie Jones Will Lovejoy, while the senior captains are Cara Bennett Ben Thompson. Good luck to all for next season.

Athlete of the Month- November

The committee has agreed that the Club will recognize the achievements of an Athlete each month. This may be a good win, Club Record, a big improvement in a PB, always trying hard at training nights or simply get club valuable points by competing in several events.

The athlete for November2017 isMatthew Brunnock– Matthew is a newcomer to the club making his debut in May 2017. He has competed in the 100m, 200m, Shot and 800m. It is the 800m that he has really come to the fore, winning four of his six races at this distance, and placing second in the other two. His best time of 2m31.57, place him 35th in the West Midlands. This endurance has now shone through in the Cross Country, placing 15th in his first race, and improving to 8th at his last race on 4th November at Malmesbury. Apart from his on track abilities, Matthew is always enthusiastic and smiling. We look forward Matthew joining a strong under 15 squad next season – well done.

YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU (TO COMPETE)

Gloucestershire X-Country League – 4thNovember - Malmesbury

The second event of this season took place in Wiltshire, making for a long journey for our athletes. In the Senior Mens race, Andrew Tyler put in his usual strong performance, placing 80th (16th in the Over 45’s) in 42.05 minutes. Brian Morgan was 177th (33rd in the O45’s) in 51.52minutes. In the Under 15’s Pat Morgan was 20th in 18.17minutes. In the under 13 boys Matt Brunnock led our runners coming 8th in 15.24minutes. Farley Brookes was 25th in 16.32minutes, with his brother Alfie coming 34th in 17.06minutes. This placed the under 13 Boys 5th out of 12 teams. It was great to see Benjamin Hawkyard make his cross country debut, finishing a brilliant 10th out of 76 in 10.37 minutes. He was closely followed by the experienced Luke Fox, who was just 5 seconds behind in 13th. These two boys need just one more runner to make a great team!

In the ladies races Bronwen Tyler-Jones came 142nd (22nd in the over 45s) in 38.34minutes. In the Under 13’s Eva Tyler ran a strong race to come 12th in 16.24minutes, ElizabethWilliams was 30th in 18.50minutes closely followed by Leah Ellis who was 32nd in 19.03minutes.This placed our team 8th.

The next race is on 10th December at Wotton-Under-Edge, it would be great have a couple more athletes there to make up teams. If you fancy having a run out, contact Brian Morgan, Andrew Tyler or Dave Brookes. Full results and details are on

Indoor Sports Hall – Worcester

There have been two meetings already. The first on match on 22nd October saw some individual and team successes with theunder 13 girls coming 3rd, the under 13 boys were 2nd. In the under 15’s, Harriet Oaker won the vertical jump, while Pat Morgan won the standing long jump and speed bounce.

The second match saw far more success for our teams. The under 11 boys were second, as were the under 13 boys, whilst the under 13 girls were 3rd,the under 11 girls were 5th. The under 15 girls won a close fought relay. In the Under 15 boys, Will Lovejoy and Pat Morgan dominated the speed bounce.

The next Sports Hall is on 17th December in Worcester. This a great indoor event, with plenty of fun. See you there!

Pentathlon

On 7th October Will Lovejoy undertook his first multi-events competition at the Welsh Combined Events Championships in Cardiff. Will undertook a couple of new events, including the 60m Hurdles running 11.03 seconds. His Long Jump of 4.87metres was good. A PB in the 200m of 25 seconds flat, was very pleasing. A Shot of 7.14metres was satisfactory. The final 800 metre event, saw Will to post a quick 2m21.73s. This gave a total of 2071 points (a Club Record) placing Will 10th overall. Will, will be in the same age group next year.

Editors note- Having done a couple of indoor Pentathlons myself, they are great fun trying different events. Furthermore, you never get wet or cold, and all events are in perfect conditions. Perhaps Hereford could have half a dozen competing next year!
