No. 2A.Widows Claim for Pension – State of Ohio1 June 1865. Filed in Ohio, Wyandot. John Suber died October 1864. Declarer was married John Suber 27 March 1857 by Silas Burson, Justice of the Peace. Children: Albert A., 21 December 1855, Amanda E. 24 March 1857, Alfred J. 19 December 1858, Benjamin Franklin 6 February 1861. Lives and resides in Salem Twnsp. Post office is Carey, Wyandot, Ohio.

No. 3.From Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D.C.14 August 1865. Acknowledgment of receipt of Pension No. 96.668. John Suber enrolled 19 August 1862 at Carey, Wyandot, Ohio, serving 3 years, mustered in as Pvt. On 24 September 1862, at CampMonroeville in Co. A, 123 Regiment. Reported mustered out 12 June 1865 and reported died of disease 25 November 1864 while a prisoner of war. Nature of disease was not stated.

No. 4B.Affidavit of Witnesses. Stating as to her claim and residence. Dated 8 March 1866.

No. 4C.Notary Public Witnesses. Affidavit of witnesses Mary S. Wright and Lydia Ann Burson that they were present at the marriage of John and Lydia.

No. 5.Claim for Widows Pension. Proof Exhibited. Adjutant General reports soldier mustered out 24 September 1862 and died a prisoner of war 25 November 1864. Marriage proved by copy of county record and names and dates of children’s birth. Pension of $8.00 per month per child starting 25 November 1864. Dated 1 May 1866.

No. 7.Claim for Increase of Widows Pension. Date of Marriage: 27 November 1857. Children under 16: Alfred, Albert and Benjamin. Additional $8l00 per child starting 18 July.

No. 8A.Affidavit of 11 November 1868. Pensioners Attorney certified he has no interest in prosecution of claim. Residence is Sabula, Iowa.

No. 87B.Widows Claim for Increase of Pension. State of Iowa, County of Jackson dated 18 November 1868. Deposition by Lydia, as to resident of Iowa, stating she is widow of John Suber, who died 16 October 1864 and that she has remained a widow since the death of her husband and she received a Pension Certificate 72.606 of $8.00 a month and Alfred, Albert and Benjamin are residents of Iowa. Appoints attorney. Witnessed by David M. and Elizabeth Briggs stating they have known Lydia for 30 years and have no interest in this claim. Surrenders No. 72.606 to obtain increased rate under Act as approved 25 July 1866.

No. 9B8A.Declaration for Widows Pension and Increase. Dated 24 April 1869. Pension Notary’s Affidavit. Certifies as to applicant’s marriage on or about 27 December 1854 in Wyandot County, Ohio by Justice of Peace and that there is a record evidence of marriage filed with her pension claim settles by Certificate 72.606 11___ May 1866. States her husband died in Rebel prison at State of North Carolina on or about 16 November 1864 of starvation. States she is and has remained a widow and has Alfred, Albert and Benjamin with her and has not abandoned the support of any one of the children, nor permitted any one of the same to be adopted by any person or persons and they are the legitimate children of herself and the deceased and that her said husband left no children by a prior marriage. Appoints Milo B. Stevens & Bro, war claims agents of Cleveland, Ohio, her attorneys.

No. 109.Affidavit of Physician in Attendance At Birth. Testifies he attended births of Alfred, Amanda, Albert and Benjamin. Dated 26 May 1869.

No. 10.Claim for Increase of Widows Pension. Date of Marriage: 27 November 1857. Children under 16: Alfred, Albert and Benjamin. Additional $2.00 per child per month starting 18 July 1864. Approved 1 July 1869.

No. 11.Return of License, State of Iowa, Jackson Co. Certification on 8 March 1871. Marriage of Harker Knowles and Mrs. Lydia A. Suber at her home in Sabula. Certified by Court Clerk on 3 August 1871.

No. 12.State of Iowa, Jackson Co. Alfred J. and Benjamin F. infant heirs at law of John Suber of Wyandot, Ohio, deceased, are entitled to a certain estate in Jackson Co. and whereas Lydia A. Knowles appeared before E. J. Holmes, Clerk of the Court on 6 July 1874 and applied for Letters of Guardianship of the person and estate of said minors and said Lydia A. Knowles has entered into bonds for the faithful performance of her duty Lydia appointed guardian of the person and estate of Alfred J. and Benjamin F. Suber, Dated 6 July 1874.

No. 13B13A.Declaration of Pension for Children Under 16. On 14 August 1874, E.J. Holmes appeared Lydia Knowles, a resident of Iowa Township, Jackson Co. Iowa and declared in order to obtain the pension provided by Acts of Congress for children under 16, that she is legal guardian of Benjamin Franklin Suber and Alfred Jacob Suber, Amanda Elizabeth Suber and Albert Aaron Suber, legitimate children of John Suber who enlisted under name of John Suber at Upper Sandusky, Wyandot Co, Ohio on 14 August who died of starvation at Salisbury Prison while a prisoner of war on 15 November 1863, and she resides in Sterling, Jackson Co. Iowa and above named are only surviving legitimate children under 16 at the time of his death of whom Amanda Elizabeth died on 16 September 1864.

No. 15A. Notary Statement. Certification by Lydia Knowles on 21 May 1875 as to the death of Amanda Elizabeth on 16 September 1864.

No. 15B15A. Testimony of Lydia Knowles. That Amanda E. Suber died in month of September 1864 and she further swears that if she stated that Benjamin Suber was born 14 February 1860, she was mistaken. His age given in former application and proof of birth is 12 February 1861 was true and correct and corresponds with record of birth in family bible and which is the true date of birth. Dated 21 May 1875.

No. 15C15B. Testimony. Testimony of Harker Knowles. He certifies that he has examined the record kept in the family Bible of Lydia Knowles and that records stated that Benjamin F. Suber was born 12 February 1861 and he believed record to be true and correct. Dated 21 May 1875.

Rate of Pension at $8.00 per month commencing 9 March 1871 and increased by $2.00 per month for per child until each reaches the age of 16. Approved 24 July 1875.
