“Restore us, O God Almighty;

make your face shine upon us,

that we may be saved.”

(Psalm 80:7 NIV)

What a beautiful prayer in this month of October. Restore us, O God Almighty! The leaves are changing, the nights have grown cool. The warmth of summer is a memory—the days are growing shorter. But never let your love, O Lord, grow shorter with us. When we need healing, reformation, and reconciliation, let your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.

There is so much to look forward to this October. We are all invited to attend the Bishop Michael Rhyne’s installation on Saturday, October 18th at 2 p.m. The ceremony will be held at First Lutheran in Johnstown. Please come!

We look forward to the Relay for Life Yard Sale on Saturday, October 4th, and the blessing of the animals on the same morning at 10 a.m. Toward the end of the month will be Reformation Sunday, on October 26th. The Adult Forum and Sunday school are in full swing; there are so many opportunities to study and hear God’s Word.

[Looking forward into November, Bishop Michael will be hosting an open house here at St. Paul’s Mundy’s Corner for the people of the Johnstown Conference on Thursday evening November 6th at 7 p.m. The Bishop would like to meet you—so please plan on attending that evening.]

On another note, my role as Vacancy Pastor at Trinity Sidman and St. John Summerhill is coming to a close at the end of October. Effective November first, Pastor Walter Startzel will be the interim pastor for those two churches. Thank you for your prayers for these two churches. We have shared ministry with them for ten months now; God’s peace and blessings be upon them as they start the next chapter of their ministry with Pastor Walter.

God’s peace be with you! May His face shine upon you, and restore you!

Pastor Kevin

WE HAVE A NEW NAME!

The Service and Witness Committee has taken on a new name--the OUTREACH COMMITTEE. Since the Service Committee and the Witness Committee joined together, the term “Outreach” serves as a good description of both former committees’ goals.

This committee has some wonderful ongoing activities that reach out/serve the members of our congregation and our community:

Prayer Chain

Blood Drive

Salvation Army Bell Ringing

and wrapping Christmas presents

Homebound Visits/Cards/Phone Calls

Book Presentations to New Babies

College Student Care Packages

Mourners’ Meals

Ladies’ Night Out

Please consider helping with one or more of these activities. The Outreach Committee had its first meeting of the fall on September 30, 2014 at 6:30 in the Church Lounge. Please watch your bulletin for the next meeting of the committee!

IT’S TIME FOR LADIES’ NIGHT OUT!

Leave those dishes! Unplug the vacuum! Save the laundry for tomorrow! Our first Ladies’ Night Out will be held on Friday, October 17, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in Luther Hall! Come join us for a relaxing and fun evening--just talking and sharing our stories, learning new things, and enjoying each other’s company. We hope to see you there!

Thrivent will be purchasing ground beef to distribute to the 6 food pantries in the area. This will need packaged into 1 pound packages. Help will be appreciated. Questions??? Check with Dave Shoemaker!

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS….

Our annual blessing for our pets will be Saturday, October 4tth, 10 a.m. at the Pavilion. We welcome you to bring all of your pets for this special blessing as they are “family members” too and hold a special place in your heart. Any that are not able to be held should be on a leash or properly restrained

Food Bank…. Update

Work continues in planning and implementing the new food pantry. Plans are in place to have our second distribution on Tuesday, September 30th at the Nanty Glo Firehall. Volunteers are needed to gather at 9 a.m. to pack boxes and distribution will begin at noon. All donated food needs to be brought to the firehall that morning also. Work continues on the storage building and we are hoping to soon be able to get shelving and freezer space to store the food at that building. If you have questions about the progress of the food bank, I will try to answer your questions and keep you updated, as this is a work in progress. Volunteers will always be needed to help with the food bank and hopefully we can develop a schedule as we get more organized. This is truly an “Interfaith” project and the Lord has been at work within our midst. We continue to need donations of both food items and dollars and, most importantly, your prayers to keep us moving forward.

Thank You. Debbie

SHARING FROM THE HEART

Fall in full bloom…. That’s what we’ll be experiencing in the next month or two and chilly days and evenings are heated up in our homes with the sweet smells of the fruits of our harvest this year. This month I’m sharing some pumpkin hints and I thank Christine Gillin, my friend and a CambriaCounty Master Gardener, for the following recipes. It makes using our fresh pumpkin so easy to prepare and the muffins are excellent! I’ve also substituted ripe bananas in the muffin recipe and again…. They’re heavenly! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

PUMPKIN…. Not just for Pie!

Spray sheet pan with Pam or oil. Cut pumpkin crosswise. Remove seeds and strings. Rinse. Place cut side down on the pan, cover with foil and bake at 350* approx 2 hours or until pumpkin is soft when poked with your finger. Take from pan (it may appear to have some browned edges, I just cut these off.) and scoop the pumpkin from the rind, stir briskly with a large spoon, measure for your favorite recipe. (I usually scoop the pumpkin into a large sieve and let it set for a while. It’s amazing how much water will drain from the cooked pumpkin!) This can be frozen for future use or used immediately….. as in the following muffin recipe!

PUMPKIN MUFFINS
