Lunch Out Activity

Part I

  1. Grouping:

We will divide the class into three groups of five. Everyone in the group needs to use a different eatery. Select a menu from a local restaurant. (Fifth students…fifth different restaurants.)

  1. Data Collection:

Each student will receive five index cards. (one card for each of five eateries) One eatery at a time, select a meal. Meals must include at least three items but not more than five items. (drink, appetizer, soup, salad, entree, dessert) Only one item from each food category may be ordered. Students may not share food or drinks for this assignment. Some examples: One student is not allowed to order a deli tray of 30 sandwiches. Five students may not split a large pizza.

When setting up the index card, Eatery Name goes at the top, your name is on the next line. Divide the rest of the card into two columns. Head one column with Food/Drink and the other with Price. (If drink prices are not listed you may guesstimate $2.00. Tap water is free.)

  1. Project Collection:

Each student should collect all the index cards for their selected restaurant. Each student will need a piece of poster board, related clip art, and creative additions.

Part II

  1. Complete the Lunch Out chart using your eatery’s data.
  2. Record each student’s name and the cost of their food order.
  3. Total all meals together at the bottom of the form.
  4. Add 6% sales tax to each meal separately. Total tax at the bottom.
  5. Calculate an 18% gratuity for each meal before sales tax. Total at bottom.
  6. Add the gratuity to the cost of the meal and sales tax for each student. Total at bottom.
  7. Divide the total cost for the group by five to calculate the divided cost per person. Each person would owe ___if the bill was divided equally. Record on the data sheet for each student.
  8. Calculate the difference between splitting the bill evenly or paying for each meal separately. Record differences on the data sheet with a +/- it show if splitting the bill was better or worse for each student.
  9. Write a fictional story that includes the best way to settle the bill? Should you split the bill…ask for separate checks…justify your choice. Would you go out to lunch again…positives/negatives/changes. Be creative. (250 to 500 words, at least five paragraphs.)

Part III

  1. Make a poster to display your eatery’s findings. Include a stenciled/printed title, framed index cards, menu, framed data sheet, food clip art or student art, and a framed written conclusion.

Bon Appetite!
