Course Description:

At JN Fries the Physical Education curriculum is designed to encourage the development of “intelligent performers” and to encourage students to understand the importance of a balanced, healthy lifestyle. Students will participate in a variety of fitness activities and recreational sports. Examples of these activities include but are not limited to:

Main Goals:

  • Help students develop a lifelong interest in recreational activities and sports.
  • Expose students to sports from around the world.
  • Promote acceptable standards of social attitudes, good sportsmanship and behavior.
  • Help students to develop useful leisure time recreational skills.
  • Help students to achieve and maintain a higher level of physical efficiency and fitness.

Requirements:

Physical education meets grades 6-8 for two quarters each year. All students are expected to come to PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS with the following materials:

  • T-shirt or sweatshirt
  • Shorts (minimum 5” inseam) or sweatpants
  • Socks and tennis shoes properly worn and tied (no sandals or slippers)

All students must wear a complete change of Physical Education attire in accordance with school dress code. Classes will be held both inside and outside during the fall and spring. Be prepared to dress accordingly.Failure to dress out appropriately will result in loss of points.

Evaluation:

Grades are determined based on a “total points” system. The total point a student earns is divided by the total points possible for that student to earn. These points are then converted to a standard letter grade. The following is an outline of our grading procedure:

  • Students will earn a maximum of 20 points
  • Participation – actively engaged in the lesson (5 pts)
  • Skill – demonstrates appropriate level of skill (5 pts)
  • Sportsmanship – demonstrates positive attitude and interaction (5 pts)
  • Dressing Out – dressing in own clothes (5); borrowing change of clothes from JNF (3); not changing (0).
  • A student well enough to be in school is generally well enough to dress out and participate in class. (Any exception to this will be handled on an individual basis).
  • Students need to wear exercise apparel each class. This includes shorts, t-shirt, sweat pants and rubber soled shoes with shoe laces.

**** If a student misses more than one PE class they are responsible for completing a sports activity packet or completing a teacher approved article summary.****

Major Assessments:

Upon completion of a unit, a summative assessment will be used to evaluate student learning. This assessment will incorporate the use of the International Baccalaureate rubric system. The maximum score on the rubric will be 8 points. The rubric score will also be converted to a percentage score. The four objectives for the IB grading system to be covered include:

  • Criterion A: Knowing and Understanding
  • Criterion B: Planning for Performance
  • Criterion C: Applying and Performing
  • Criterion D: Reflecting and Improving Performance

Team or Individual Class Policies/Procedures:

Locker-Room

  • Make sure to put your clothes and all of your belongings in your locker and lock it.The PE staff is not responsible for any stolen items that are unlocked.
  • No horseplay or loud noise in the locker room. Keep your hands to yourself and off other students’ belongings.
  • Do not slam lockers.
  • Keep the locker room clean, including throwing away all trash and picking up assignments.
  • Eating and drinking in the locker room is not allowed.
  • Once class begins, no student will be allowed back into the locker room without permission.

Student Responsibilities

  • Students will be given five minutes at the beginning of class and five minutes at the end of class to change.
  • No gum chewing, food or drink is to be consumed in the gym or locker room.
  • All injuries must be reported to the teacher during the class period so the proper action can be taken.
  • No student may leave the class or assigned area without permission from the teacher.
  • Misuse, abuse, or destruction of physical education equipment will not be tolerated.Students will only use equipment with teacher permission.
  • Equipment should only be used for its intended purpose.
  • Appropriate language is expected at all times.
  • Students will respect each other and keep hands and feet to themselves.
  • Play fair, display good sportsmanship and be courteous to other students and teachers.
  • At the end of the period, after dressing wait patiently by the hallway doors to be dismissed.

HEALTH EDUCATION AT JN FRIES

Course Description:

The core expectation of the middle school health education program is that students will learn about physical, mental, emotional and social health. It builds students’ knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes about health. The health education program motivates students to improve and maintain their health, prevent disease, and reduce risky behaviors. A planned and sequential 6-8 health education curriculum addresses all dimensions of health in a way that results in students who possess the knowledge and skills to live a healthy life.By providing a comprehensive middle school health education program, we are facilitating optimum student learning. When children are healthy, they can learn; when they are educated, they can stay healthy.

Main Goals:

  • Students will gain the knowledge and skills to remain healthy throughout their lives.
  • Students will gain an appreciation for the lifelong benefits of living a healthy lifestyle.
  • Students will be motivated to improve and maintain their health, prevent disease and injury and reduce risky behaviors.

Requirements:

Health education meets grades 6-8 for two quarters each year.

All students are expected to come to HEALTH EDUCATION CLASS with the following materials:

  • Health binder/folder
  • Pencil or pen
  • All health assignments and/or homework

Students will participate in a variety of health education units outlined by the North Carolina Healthful Living Essential Standards. These units include: mental and emotional health, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, reproductive health and safety, and nutrition and physical activity.

Evaluation:

The majority of points possible for a student are based upon formal and informal assessments, projects, presentations and class work.

**NO work will be accepted 10 school days after the assigned due date**

  • Always keep a positive attitude!
  • Respect themselves, others and the health classroom and all materials
  • Follow the student handbook and all PBIS expectations.
  • Demonstrate appropriate behavior at all times.
  • Maintain confidentiality and avoid identifying individuals.
  • Be sensitive to other students’ differences, feelings and opinions.
