Moving elephants

Lubrication-free plastic slide pads for types of movement

igus GmbH, Cologne, has a comprehensive range of polymer plain bearings for the lubrication-free support of shafts and rails during rotation and lifting movements. The tribologically optimised plastics can also be used for longitudinal movement. The company recently presented “DryLin” slide pads for this purpose. These slide pads can be used in many different applications, e.g. steel girders or aluminium base plates, and allow up to two tonnes to be moved slowly and dynamically. This means four pads would be required to move the weight of an African bull elephant.

Lubricant-free slide pads made of a high-performance polymer that can be used almost anywhere. They are used when work is being done on any surface. The subject of hygiene plays a major role, to prevent bearings becoming dirty on undefined sliding tracks or paths.

Extremely low friction values

The new slide pads are made of “iglidur J” material which combines extremely low friction values with a very long service life. The material has high strength and elasticity values, excellent resistance to creep, as well as superb sliding properties. The excellent elasticity values mean that the material does not plastically deform, even under shock loading.

The “DryLin” pads are resistant to temperatures up to 90 °C, as well as being corrosion and chemical resistant. According to igus, larger masses can be moved on various surfaces (steel, aluminium, stainless steel etc.) without lubricants being necessary and with excellent wear properties. Screw connection through the metal insert guarantees a firm hold. The slide disks are available immediately from stock in the outer diameter sizes 40, 60 and 80 mm. The static load-bearing capacity is 120,000, 66,000 or 28,500 N. igus also offers numerous “iglidur” semi-finished products for individual designs. Alternatively, custom machined parts and sizes can be ordered.
