Station #1

Research:

Look up the following items on the internet or in the science book.

Define Mass

What equipment is used to measure mass

What is the SI unit used for mass

Define Speed

Find the equation for speed and give 2 to 3 example questions. (If a man walks a distance of 4 m in 60 seconds, what is his speed?)

Define Velocity

Station #2

Practice Questions:

Use your notes and example problems to help you complete the following questions.

  1. Kinetic energy can be defined as....
  1. The equation to be used to calculate kinetic energy ( Ek) is...
  1. The SI unit in which Ekis often measured is the ...______.
  1. Rodger Maris swung a bat which had a mass of 2 Kg at a velocity of 45 m/s.

How many joules of kinetic energy could he give to a ball?

5. Barry Bonds swings a bat which has a mass of 1.5 Kg at a velocity of 55 m/s.

How many joules of kinetic energy could he give to a ball?

6. Which is more important to hitting a home run - a heavier bat or a faster swing?

______

7. A golf pro swings his driver which weighs .75 kg at a velocity of 60 m/s.

Calculate the kinetic energy of the club.

8. Calculate the KE of a car which has a mass of 1000 kg and is moving at the rate

of 20 m/s.

9. What is the KE of a soccer ball which has a mass of 0.8 kg and is kicked at a

velocity of 10 m/s?

10. Calculate the Ek of a running back that has a mass of 80 kg and is running at a

velocity of 8 m/s.

Station #3

Determining Speed

Hold a meter stick perpendicular to the floor and drop a bouncy ball from the top of the meter stick (start the timer). When the ball hits the table top or floor stop the stopwatch. Record the time in your data table. Repeat this process for two more heights (1.5 meters, 2meters, 2.5 meters). Use the equation Speed = distance/time to figure out how fast the bouncy ball was falling.

Use a chart like the following to record your data.

Distance (meters) / Time (seconds) / Speed (distance/Time or meters/seconds)

Station #4

Graph the following data on a line graph:

Distance (meters) / Time (seconds)
10 m / 3 s
20 m / 6 s
30 m / 9 s
40 m / 12 s
50 m / 15 s

Station 5

Example:

Find the speed of an object that has a mass of 100 kg and has a Kinetic Energy of 5000J

You can use either of the following methods to find the speed of an object when given the Kinetic Energy (joules) and the mass (kg)

USING MATHEMATICAL PROCESS / PLUG AND CHUG

1) Mr. James is driving his car on I-275. He has a current Kinetic Energy of 700 Joules. The car mass is 300 kg. How fast is Mr. James driving?

2) Michael Phelps weight is 80 Kgs. When he is swimming he excerpts around 300 Joules of energy. How fast is Michael Phelps going when he is winning his gold medals?

3) Jimmie Johnson makes sure that he puts out 75,500 Joules of Kinetic Energy every time he races. Every car in racing is 500 Kgs. When Jimmie Johnson races, what is his speed?

4) A watermelon is 55 Kgs in mass. When dropping a watermelon off of a building it has 752 Joules. What is a watermelons velocity when dropped off of a building.

Station 6

Example:

A ball is moving at 10 m/s down a sidewalk. Its Kinetic Energy is 750 Joules. What is the mass of the object?

You can use either of the following methods to find the speed of an object when given the Kinetic Energy (joules) and the velocity (m/s)

USING MATHEMATICAL PROCESS / PLUG AND CHUG

1) Tiger woods hit his drives with a 100,000 Joules. The golf balls woods hit are usually move with a velocity of 60 m/s. What is the mass of his golf balls?

2) An elephant moves at a rate of 4 meters per second. The elephant has an average Kinetic Energy of around 645 Joules. What is an elephants mass in Kilograms?

3) Jay Bruce is one the MLB best homerun hitters. When he hits homeruns, the balls have a speed of 75 m/s. The homeruns have 894 Joules of energy. What is the balls mass?

4) Michael Jordan is greatest player to ever play basketball. When he dunks a ball his Kinetic Energy is 528 Joules. His speed is 26 m/s. What is his mass?

5) What is a school bus’s mass if it has a kinetic energy of 765 Joules. The bus has a speed of 80 m/s. What is bus’s mass?
