Long Service Award Scheme

This scheme is intended to recognise an employee's long service with the University of Central Lancashire by the award of a gift or memento.

1 ELIGIBILITY

1.1 The provisions of the Long Service Award Scheme applies to all employees of the University.

1.2 Employees who have completed not less than 25 years qualifying service, (as defined in paragraph 2 below).

1.3 In the event of the death "in service" of an employee already having completed the qualifying service, their nominated beneficiary will be eligible under this scheme.

2 QUALIFYING SERVICE

2.1 For the purpose of this scheme, qualifying service shall be deemed to be a minimum of 25 years' service with the University (subject to paragraph 2.2 below) which must be verified by Human Resources.

2.2 Continuous periods of employment with constituent bodies of the University (i.e. Harris College, Preston Polytechnic, Chorley College of Education, Poulton-le-Fylde College of Education, Lancashire College of Midwifery, Lancashire College of Nursing and Health Studies, Lancashire Polytechnic), previous service with Lancashire County Council and those constituent Authorities prior to Local Government Reorganisation in 1974 will count if the employee was transferred on 1 April 1974 and/or 1st April 1989.

2.3 If a former employee rejoins the University after having previously:

(i) in the case of a female employee, left the University on account of her pregnancy and resumed service within a period of five years;

(ii) left the University voluntarily but resumed service within a period of three months, the employee shall be entitled to aggregate the first period of employment with employment subsequent to rejoining the University for the purposes of computing the long service entitlement;

(iii) left the University due to having been made redundant but resumed service within a period of 2 years, the employee shall be entitled to aggregate the period of employment before the date of redundancy with employment subsequent to rejoining the University for the purposes of computing the long service entitlement.

3 VALUE OF AWARD

All qualifying staff will be eligible to receive a gift or memento of his/her personal choice at a total value of £500 inclusive of VAT and any delivery costs. Alternatively, staff may elect to have the value of the award paid to them, however, this will be subject to the deduction of PAYE and National Insurance. Staff may elect to purchase an item at a total value of more or less than £500, and in such circumstances should refer to the Long Service Award process.

4 TIMING OF THE AWARD

Employees may elect to receive their award at:

(i) the time of completing 25 years' service as defined within the scheme;

or

(ii) their date of retirement, resignation or redundancy, having completed in excess of 20 years qualifying service. In such circumstances, the value of the award will be reduced by £20 for each year short of the maximum 25.

5 FORM OF THE AWARD

The gift or memento must be in the form of tangible moveable property in order to qualify for the HMRC exemption from PAYE tax and National Insurance.

Alternatively, staff may elect to have the value of the award paid to them, however staff should note that this payment will be subject to the deduction of PAYE and National Insurance. The HMRC exemption from PAYE and National Insurance does NOT apply to awards in the form of any cash payment, cash vouchers, credit tokens or the purchase of shares or securities.
