LL 1202 Modes of assessment activity
Purpose:
- Broaden the perspective of students on different modes of assessment
Learning outcomes:
By the end of this task, students will be able to:
- Identify different modes of assessment
Resources needed:
Task sheet + answers handout
Task:
Part 1: Small groupactivity
Using task sheet, students should:
match definitions with words
pair modes into opposites
Part 2: Plenary discussion
Take feedback on board from each group before giving correct answers.
Then give out answers handout
Discussion (either as whole group or in small groups) as to how many of these modes they use.
MODES OF ASSESSMENT – THE “MODES” GAME
16 approaches (or ‘modes’) to carrying out assessment are listed below.
(1) Try to match the definitions with the words, by writing the number of the definition next to the name of the mode (eg Process .. ‘4’ – not correct!)
(2) Pair the modes into opposites (eg continuous-formal – again, not correct!)
CONTINUOUS______TERMINAL______
COURSE WORK______PROCESS______

PRODUCT______IDIOGRAPHIC______
INTERNAL______SUMMATIVE______
NOMOTHETIC______EXTERNAL______
CONVERGENT______INFORMAL______
FORMAL______FORMATIVE______
1)Assessing the learning as it happens, rather than the outcome
2)Assessment by someone who does not know the student in their setting
3)Assessment which highlights the uniqueness of the individual in his/her own right
4)Unobtrusive assessment where the situation is less apparent, eg assessment through observation of discussion/talk
5)By someone who knows the student in their setting
6)Designed to compare one individual with others
7)A set task or tasks given to all students under controlled conditions
8)A final assessment on which no further teaching will be based
9)What is completed as an integral part of a course
10)Tasks or questions with a single correct answer
11)The information obtained through assessment is used to develop and improve (build on) existing learning or knowledge
12)A tangible “thing” which has the possibility of being measured/reviewed
13)Standardised assessment where all learners are aware of the assessment
14)Final … at end of programme
15)Intermittent … happening throughout the programme
16)Open-ended task/question with no single correct answer
