36 Crime at 36 Bedford Row has a vacancy for a probationary tenant. The position we offer is similar to a third six but the expectation is that after 6 months the probationary tenancy converts into a full tenancy. We have recruited four crime team probationary tenants over the last 3 years and all have become full tenants.

Our Work
36 Crime, the 36 Group's criminal law team, comprises more than 40 members, including 8 Queen’s Counsel and is serviced by a clerking team of six.
We prosecute and defend publicly and privately funded cases at all levels of criminal tribunal, from the Magistrates' Courts to the Supreme Court.
We have specialist counsel available for areas of work where the prosecuting body or defendant is better served by being represented by specialists. This ranges from cases involving the perpetration of serious offences on the ‘Dark Web’ and the Cybercrime phenomenon (particularly fraud and sexual offences) to Extradition, Trading Standards offences, Confiscations, Disciplinary and Regulatory work, Licensing and so on.
Chambers is based in London and we have a strong reputation for acting in cases in London and the South East. We also have a very well-established presence throughout the East and West Midlands and we have trial counsel in courts throughout these areas every day.

What Are We looking for?
We have always regarded our pupils and probationary tenants as our future and we seek to invest our time and resources to ensure they develop as fully as possible. Probationary tenants are always recruited with a view to offering them tenancy at the end of the 6 months if they satisfy our criteria.
We are looking for applicants who have the potential to become outstanding barristers and who are actively involved in the development of the 36 Crime Team. We are keen to recruit bright, independently-minded people who are articulate, confident, and perceptive. You should be keen to learn, have the ability to get on with people, and be able to demonstrate common sense and good judgment. We value diversity and encourage creative and original thinking.
We have recruited via this route those who have previously been in-house and would encourage any applicant who is in this position to apply as well as those without tenancy in other chambers.
Probationary tenancy expectations
You would be asked to commence your probationary period within 3 days of accepting our offer.
The probation period usually lasts six months.
You will have at least one named mentor from the 36 Crime team.
Our clerking team is supportive and proactive and you will be expected to communicate effectively with them to ensure that you and the team are getting the best out of the probationary tenant experience.
You will be expected to prosecute and defend in equal measure. The vast majority of your work will be in the crown court so a CPS grading should be applied for if not yet acquired.
We encourage those who wish to develop, alongside their core crime practice, complimentary areas such as cybercrime, extradition, disciplinary, regulatory or trading standards work
You will be expected to travel out of London regularly
You will be expected to participate in chambers events such as training sessions, marketing events and work and career development initiatives
