Project Description: GIS, cartography, physical geography, geospatial data;

Achieving the mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is not possible without accurate maps of the entire mosaic of conserved public lands. The fellow will work within the Division of Realty learning the process of geospatial data management and updating easement geospatial data. The Fellow will create and update geospatial data for Wetland Management Districts and National Wildlife Refuges in the Midwest Region. They will develop a GIS data model that is consistent with the cadastral database in order to facilitate the inclusion of data creation and updates. This work will be used for future assessment, management, and mapping projects across the region. Accurate maps are also needed by law enforcement officers and biologists in monitoring easement compliance by providing accurate boundary information.

Minimum Education Level and Major Requirements Required:

Graduate student who has completed their first year of graduate school in GIS, Geographic Information Sciences, Physical Geography or other closely related field.

Key Requirements:

Experience and knowledge to work with spatial mapping and remote sensing software including ArcGIS 10.X, Erdas Imagine 10.X and/or ENVI 5.X.

Experience with data management; planning, creating, evaluating, and presenting a GIS-related project.

Good oral and written communication skills to develop a sustainable methodology for future GIS work.

Ability to communicate with Service staff both at the Regional Office and at field stations and other Federal and State resource agencies. High-level of confidence and professionalism.

Knowledge of basic imagery analysis techniques and image classification workflows.

Understanding of state and county coordinate systems and the importance of coordinate systems and projections; working with data across a large geographic area.

Desired Skills/Experience:

Ability to read and understand warranty and quit claim deeds to be able to determine the legal description of the easement as well as determine the boundaries from a historical map.
