Job title: Direct Marketing Manager

Location: Based at Head Office, Southwark

Department: Development

Responsible to: Head of Direct Marketing and Digital

Main job purpose: To raise income through direct and interactive marketing

Responsible for: One part time direct report

Key areas of responsibilities

Campaign management

·  To project manage a programme of direct marketing campaigns (including but not limited to mail, email, digital and telemarketing); including campaign planning, creative development, briefing data extractions, set up of backend procedures, co-ordinating print and production and liaising with agencies.

·  To manage all retention activities – appeals, raffles, newsletters, regular giving stewardship programme, conversion and upgrade activities.

·  To manage the direct marketing acquisition activity, including media/list selection, creative development and testing.

·  To assist with the development of the In Memoriam and Legacy marketing strategies and manage the implementation of their promotion and stewardship activities.

·  To support the trading activity with promotion and catalogue development.

·  To ensure that all offline direct marketing activity integrates with digital and online channels.

Budgeting and reporting

·  To maximise value for money from all external suppliers including advertising space, print, enclosing and data processing through accurate briefings and negotiation.

·  To manage the invoicing process and campaign income and expenditure and make sure it stays within budget.

·  To provide campaign reports, analysis and evaluation, drawing conclusions and making recommendations for future activity.

·  To assist with planning of yearly marketing plans, strategy and budgets, providing costing, analysis and contributing ideas and opinions.

Supporter care

·  To plan and supervise the work of the marketing administrator, as well as volunteers as required.

·  To ensure that any complaints or enquiries for information are dealt with in a sensitive and timely manner in line with the charity’s policy, and that thank you letters for special donations are sent promptly.

·  To engage with Muscular Dystrophy UK supporters and individuals and families affected by muscle-wasting conditions, in order to develop case studies that effectively communicate the impact of muscle-wasting conditions on people lives, and the need for support.

·  To maintain the confidentiality and security of donors’ personal information at all times.

Other

·  To run relevant data queries, project analysis as required by campaigns requirements, deal with supporter queries and maintain accurate donor records in the charity’s Raiser’s Edge database.

·  To write and edit copy and maintain own web pages using the web content management system.

·  To write/edit and proofread fundraising materials including cover letters, acknowledgments, emails, appeal letters, case studies, social media posts etc.

·  To ensure all supporter communications are in line with Muscular Dystrophy’s values, brand and tone of voice; and in line with direct marketing best practice.

·  To keep up to date with trends and opportunities for maximising income from individual supporters and contribute ideas to the team.

·  To carry out any other tasks as requested by the Head of Direct Marketing and

Digital.

Extent of authority

·  Liaison with other Muscular Dystrophy UK departments and external suppliers to settle outstanding queries where appropriate.

·  Prioritising and planning own workload to ensure all projects meet deadlines and objectives

·  Liaison with appropriate staff without referral

·  Representing the charity to external marketing agencies and other suppliers without referral. Also representing the charity to donors and the general public through dealing with enquiries and providing information

Initiative/analysis:

·  Initiative to project manage creative work and copy produced, ensuring compliance to the written brief and in keeping with Muscular Dystrophy UK’s aims and objectives, which will require the checking and understanding of technical detail, and on occasion, reaching a compromise with other departments.

·  Initiative in anticipating and solving problems in own area and informing line manager and others of issues, involving them as needed.

·  Initiative in maintaining good relationships with other staff within the charity to assist in joint working, strengthen communication, solve problems and to ensure that the charity’s objectives are met.

·  Analysis of projects and identifying and recommending new ideas for developing income.

·  Initiative in maintaining a high level of sensitivity and tact when liaising directly with people affected by muscular dystrophy and related neuromuscular conditions.

Education and qualifications

Good educational standard (degree level or equivalent) / Essential

Experience

A minimum of 2 years experience creating and managing direct marketing campaigns for a charity / Essential
