Procedural Text – My Skills Checklist

Level / My Skill Checklist
Level 4 /   I have written a set of instructions that clearly describe how to do something.
  My instructions include a Title and three sections (Introduction, Materials, Method and Conclusion)
  I have used headings and numbers to help the reader follow the instructions
  The order of the steps in my procedure are correct
  I have used less than 4 WOW words throughout my Procedural Text.
  I have written a draft of my procedure and used a dictionary/thesaurus to help me with my spelling and word choice.
  I have used action words (Directional Verbs) like place, stir or cut in the instructions and describing words (Adjectives) to help the reader understand the instructions. For example, sharp, large, green.
Level 5 /   I have included at least two diagrams to help the reader understand my instructions
  In my procedure I have used ‘official’ sounding words and no slang.
  I have used at least 7 WOW words throughout my Procedural Text.
  I have made at least four changes from my draft to my published copy that improve the quality of my work
Level 6 /   I have included a series of at least three images/diagrams that help the reader understand my instructions
  I have added captions/labels to the diagrams in my procedure that clearly describe what the picture shows
  I have used words to help the reader understand what order they should do the steps in. Eg. then, after, while.
  I have used at least 10 WOW words throughout my Procedural Text.
  I have used words to describe how the reader should perform the actions. (Adverbs) For example, ‘carefully’, ‘slowly’ or ‘quickly’.
Level 7 /   I have used the correct/technical names for the materials/tools/actions.
  I have used at least 15 WOW words throughout my Procedural Text.
  I have read my procedure to another student to check for errors and suggest improvements.
  I have used a thesaurus in my editing process to research the ‘a better word’ at least twice.
Level 8 /   I have used a range of words and phrases in my procedure to make them specific. Eg. ‘from the lower left hand corner’, ‘gently apply pressure’.
  I have used at least 20 WOW words accurately throughout my Procedural Text.
  I have added some extra information for the reader, such as explanations for a step or giving warnings about what might go wrong.
Level 9 /   I have edited another students’ procedure after completing my own and reviewed it against all of the Procedural Writing dot points. I have highlighted three strengths of the piece and provided three suggestions for improvement.
