Role Title:Summer Scheme Volunteer (Adult 18+)

Location and duration of play sessions:

The Summer Scheme Volunteer may be based in one or more Community Centres.

You may choose which site/sites you prefer to volunteer from the following:-

Redburn Community Centre, Holywood
Kilcooley Community Centre, Bangor
George Green Community Centre, Bangor / Glen Community Centre, Newtownards
West Winds Community CentreNewtownards
Portaferry Sports Centre, Portaferry

Summer Scheme sessions will last no longer than 6 hours, comprising half an hour set up/break down of equipment & preparation of materials and 5 hours face to face work with children.

The role will be performed over a 3-4 week period during July & August with an agreed program of activities and relevant training opportunities.

The age range of children the Volunteer will engage with is 5 – 11 years (Primary 1 7).

Please note that there are a limited number of volunteer opportunities at each location and you may be offered a volunteer opportunity at different location form that specified. Preference will be given to those applicants who can commit to the full duration of the scheme.

Main Purpose of the Role:

  • Work as part of a team to deliver summer play activities.
  • Support the development of summer scheme opportunities in the communitybases over the summer period.
  • Contribute to the day to day planning and delivery of summer scheme which reflects the needs of children and protects their rights.
  • Develop and promote positive relationships with staff, Junior Volunteers, parents/carers/guardians and children.
  • Carry out inclusive play work with children.
  • Contribute to children’s health and wellbeing through positive play opportunities
  • Report any concerns about possible safeguarding issues.
  • Contribute to evaluating summer scheme provision.

What will you do?

As part of the team you will be assisting in supervising children’s activities, as defined within the program for each centre. This will include:-

  • Assisting with and occasionally leading games sessions
  • Assisting with and occasionally leading arts & crafts sessions
  • Assisting with the organisation and take part in the execution of trips
  • Assist with the set up and dismantling of equipment at the beginning and end of each session
  • Assist with the preparation of refreshments at break times
  • Assist with the supervision of lunch breaks

In general and as part of a team, supervise children, within the adult/child ratio set out in the Council’s Safeguarding Policy.

Prior to taking up any volunteer opportunitysuccessful candidates will be required to complete Access NI vetting procedure.

When and where will you volunteer?

Schemes run on over a 3-4 week period during July & August and.

Who will you work with?

Each Schemehas a dedicated team with a Coordinator, Leaders In Charge and a range of other staff depending on the number of children registered for each scheme. The Council’s Safeguarding Policy guidelines on staff to child ratios shall be adhered to in all instances.

Support & Supervision

There will be training and preparation meetings prior to the beginning of the Summer Schemes. At the end of each session there will be a short debrief to consolidate practice and discuss any difficulties which may have arisen.

Expenses

ANDBC will provide lunches daily for volunteers. Any receipted expenditure in relation to travel expenses will be met by the Council’s.
