LKS2 Topic: British Clothing Block H: Design Challenge

Utilise the knowledge and skills you have learnt!Start off by finding out about famous British designer Vivienne Westwood; role-play being a catwalk model and begin to think about up-cycling outfits to make new creations. Create a ‘mood board’ for your own design and work towards producing your outfits – showcase these, with a commentary, on a catwalk in front of an invited audience.

Find out about famous British designer Vivienne Westwood; role-play being a catwalk model and begin to think about up-cycling outfits to make new creations. / Children will:
  • Understand that clothing designs seen on catwalks influence the clothes available on the high street.
  • Know that Vivienne Westwood is a famous British designer whose designs have influenced fashion for much of the late 20th century.
  • Use role-play to model different items of clothing.
  • Begin to know that outfits can be ‘up-cycled’ to create new and unique pieces.

Session 2D&T
Mood Board
Start to work on a design brief for a fashion item; create a ‘mood board’ to gather all your ideas for your design; begin to select materials. / Children will:
  • Read and understand the design brief they have been given.
  • Work with a group to create a ‘mood board’. A place where they gather all their ideas before they design their final piece.
  • Listen to the ideas of others and feedback to the class about their ideas.
  • Begin to select materials, including some from previous ‘craft’ blocks, for their outfit.

Session 3D&Tand Art
Final Design
Work on the sketches for your outfit designs; consider the materials available including recycled materials; think about how you will join materials and choose your final outfit design. / Children will:
  • Sketch and colour a range of different outfit designs.
  • Consider the materials that are available, including recycled materials.
  • Label the materials they will use and indicate how they will join them together.
  • Choose the final design for their outfit.

Session 4(The practical element of session 4 can be run alongside the independent part of session 5).

Outfit Making
Follow your plan to make an outfit using some of the skill learnt during this topic; adapt and alter as you encounter unforeseen problems. / Children will:
  • Understand the design brief and follow their plan to make an outfit.
  • Showcase some of the skills they have learnt throughout the topic.
  • Select material based on their aesthetic qualities.
  • Understand that their original design may have to be altered if they encounter unforeseen problems.

Session 5(The practical element of session 4 can be run alongside the independent part of session 5).

Evaluation
Evaluate your design choices, your fashion influences and your technical expertise; write a catwalk commentary for your outfit. / Children will:
  • Discuss with their partner the design choices they made and why.
  • Consider what influenced them when they chose their final design.
  • Jot down the creative, technical and practical expertise they used when making
    their outfit.
  • Write the catwalk commentary for their outfit in the style of traditional
    fashion commentaries.
  • Evaluate if they have successfully achieved the design brief.

The show!
Showcase your design and craft skills on a catwalk in front of an invited audience; provide a commentary for your design. / Children will:
  • Showcase their design and craft skills on a catwalk in front of an audience.
  • Provide commentary about their final designs.
  • Confidently discuss the design and make process with visitors to the class.

You will need: A3 card (1 between 2); Magazines and catalogues; Large paper (1 per design brief); Sticky-tack, pins.

Session 3

You will need: Access to the Internet; Drawing paper and pencils; Watercolours, brushes and
mixing palettes.

Session 4

Provided: All the resources gathered for the outfits.

You will need: Extra adults if possible.

Session 5

Provided: Information sheet on Catwalk commentary prompts.

You will need: Access to the Internet.

Session 6

Provided: Information sheet covering Hamilton Blog - Instructions for teachers.

You will need: Access to the Internet; Video camera or video-enabled devices; Finished outfits; Microphone (if possible); Space for a runway; Runway stage (not essential).
