Job Description

Position: Director of Faith Formation

Classification: Exempt – Full-time

Reports to: Pastor

Direct reports: Faith Formation Intergenerational Coordinator

Coordinates with: Priest, Director of Evangelization/Hispanic Ministries Coordinator, Maintenance Staff, Secretarial Staff and Parish Administrator

The Director of Faith Formation will report directly to the Pastor. The Director of Faith Formation has administrative responsibilities for the total faith formation program at Assumption parish, grades 1 – 11, adult, and sacramental programs. The Director of Faith Formation must be capable of assisting the Director of Evangelization / Hispanic Ministries Coordinator and Liturgist in managing a faith formation office, which will include administrative duties involving the coordination of programs, documents, catechists, volunteers and maintenance of records. The Director of Faith Formation must be comfortable assuming responsibility for all facets of the duties and the position as needed. This is a full-time position averaging 40+ hours per week and involving flexible hours, including weekends and some evenings. Employee is expected to submit a Time & Attendance Record Form as required by Parish Administrator or Pastor. Planned absences must have prior approval of the immediate supervisors and all such absences must be recorded on time and attendance record forms.

Competencies and Scope of Responsibilities

1.  Knowledge of and the ability to convey effectively the official teachings of the church regarding scripture, doctrine, morality and spirituality with demonstrated fidelity to these teaching.

2.  Supporting the Church Faith Formation Program by:

§  Assisting with the coordinating/administrating of the Faith Formation programs for grades 1 – 11, including the direct supervision of the functioning program when necessary.

§  Coordination/administration of sacramental programs, presently involving First Reconciliation/ Eucharist, Marriage Preparation, Baptismal Preparation and RCIA / Confirmation

§  Recruitment, training, supervision and evaluation of catechists and other volunteers as deemed necessary by the Pastor.

§  Management of the Faith Formation office, which will include but not limited to:

o  Development and distribution of documents to participants, catechists, parents and parishioners, including the development and distribution of the Faith Formation Calendar and Brochure

o  Ensure adequate training and competency amongst all Parish instructors

o  Maintaining required records, including permanent records of programs and participants

o  Maintaining applications, background records and certification records for all volunteers

o  Data entry using Parish Data Systems

o  Developing and providing required documents to the diocese

o  Updating of Faith Formation information on Parish website

3.  Knowledge of or willingness to become familiar with diocesan policies and guidelines to insure that the parish’s faith formation policies and programs are developed and implemented in accordance with diocesan norms.

4.  Knowledge of or willingness to become familiar with youth ministry/catechetical documents, program resources, options and methodologies which enable the Parish to select programs, texts, audio-visual materials and other resources appropriate to meet the faith development of youth.

5.  Ability to work collaboratively with the parish staff, catechists and other religious education volunteers as well as parishioners by:

§  Meeting with appropriate individuals and groups on a regular basis for planning and communication purposes as agreed upon and deemed necessary by the Pastor or in place of the Pastor as needed.

§  Participation in parish, deanery and diocesan meetings as well as faith formation events as agreed upon and deemed necessary by the Pastor or in place of the Pastor as needed.

§  Regular updating of skill by participating in conferences and other continuing education opportunities.

6.  Preparation of regular/special request reports for the Liturgist, Administrator and Pastor as well as other appropriate individuals/groups.

7.  Serve as staff liaison to the following groups: Faith Formation Committee and Leadership for Unity in Communities.

Qualifications for the Position

8.  The ideal candidate would have a Bachelor’s Degree in the area of Religious Studies, Theology or Pastoral Ministry or a related field. Advanced degree preferred. Knowledge of and ability to convey effectively the official teaching of the Church with a demonstrated fidelity to these teachings is necessary. This person needs to possess the following qualities:

o  An active and deep faith

o  Full participation in the communal worship and life of the Church

o  Good interpersonal relationship skills

o  Good rapport with children and youth

o  Good oral and communication skills (English and Spanish)

o  Good computer skills—knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Office

o  Be collaborative and a team builder

o  Excellent organizational and administrative skills

o  Maturity

o  Flexibility and availability on weekends and after school hours is a must.
