My friend

I’m not a very sociable person. To my mind, it’s not obliged for people to have a lot of friends in order to be happy. It’s enough, as I think, to have one or two friends who are able to understand you and to support you in hard situations. So, there are few people whom I can call friends. We have much in common and we enjoy communicating with each other. One of my friends is Alice. She is eighteen. I can say that she is a beautiful and smart girl. She left school 2 years ago and now she is a second year student of the University. Alice wants to be a journalist. She studies well because she is greatly interested in her future profession. Alice is a hardworking girl too. I admire this feature of her character because I don’t have it. Alice does not have much free time but if she has, she likes to spend it in a good company, consisting of her school friends.

British Holidays and Traditions

Great Britain is an old country and it has a lot of holidays and interesting traditions. Holidays in the country are historic and public. Most public holidays are called bank holidays because banks, companies and most shops do not work on these days. Such holidays include New Year's Day, Easter Monday and others. At Easter, the British give each other chocolate eggs, which they eat on Easter Sunday. Christmas is on the 25-th of December. Families spend this day together. For many people this is the most important holiday of the year. Family members wrap up their presents and put them under the Christmas tree. Children hang colourful socks at the end of their beds for presents. They believe that Father Frost puts presents inside the socks. There are a lot of customs in Great Britain. One of the most famous is gardening. Most of the English people keep small gardens full of flowers behind their houses or around them. In spring, there are a lot of flower-shows and vegetable-shows with prizes for the best exhibitions.

English traditions

Every nation and every country has its own customs and traditions. In Britain traditions play a more important part in the life of people than in other countries. Englishmen are proud of their traditions and carefully keep them up.

There are a lot of customs you can enjoy. Some of them are very old games or plays. There is e.g. the Marbles Championship, where the British Champion is crowned; he wins a silver cup known among folk dancers is Morris Dancing, where people in beautiful clothes with ribbons and bells on them dance to traditional music with handkerchiefs or big sticks.

Of a completely different style is the Boat Race on the river Thames, often on Eastern Sunday. A boat with a team from Oxford University and one with a team from Cambridge University hold a race. Hours before the race people arrive and sit along the river.

Nature and ecology

Since ancient times Nature has served man, being the source of his life. For thousands of years people lived in harmony with environment and it seemed to them that natural riches were unlimited.

But with the development of civilization man’s interference in nature began to increase. Every year world industry pollutes the atmosphere with about 1000 million tons of dust and other harmful substances. Vast forests are cut and burn in fire. Their disappearance upsets the oxygen balance. As a result some rare species of animals, birds, fish and plants disappear forever, a number of rivers and lakes dry up. The pollution of air and the world’s ocean, destruction of the ozone layer is the result of man’s careless interaction with nature, a sign of ecological cities system of ecological security should be taken.

English writers

I like to read books. Literature helps us to live in this world and we learn a lot from books. Lately I have been interested in English literature very much. English books teach us to understand the English language the way Englishmen speak.

Such books as “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare help us to understand things which appeared to be very simple in this life.

When I have read this book I have looked at these things on the other side. My favourite writers are Mark Twain, Eduard Kipling, and Agatha Christie. Their books at times I read at the night secretly from the parents been covered myself with a blanket. And I can name many others. Today I will want tell you about Agatha Christie. Agatha Christie is known all over the world as the Queen of Crime.

Agatha Christie’s success with millions of readers lies in her ability to combine clever plots with excellent character drawing, and a keen since of humor with great powers of observation. Agatha Christie’s language is simple and good and it’s pleasant to read her books in the original.

At the doctor's

If we caught cold, have a splitting headache, have a clogged nose, cough, are running high temperature, we must go to the policlinic. First we come to the registry.

The registry clerk on a duty asks our name, address, age and occupation .He writes out some slips because several specialists will examine us. Some of them will listen to out heart and lungs, some will check up our kidneys, liver, stomach, eyesight, and hearing. The others will make our blood analysis, take our blood pressure and x-ray us.

I began to take care of myself. Now I go in for sports because sports make me strong, healthy and cheerful. Every day I do my morning exercises and have a cold rubdown to prevent myself from catching cold. There is a good proverb: An apple a day keeps doctor away. That’s why I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables.

In case of sudden and severe illness or an accident calls are made to the first aid station. There the doctors are on duty all day long. There are many ambulances there.

The ambulances are equipped with everything necessary to give the first aid. The patient is transported to hospital. There he is taken to the reception ward first. After questioning and examination the doctor fills in the patient’s case history. Then a patient is given special clothes and is put to some ward for treatment. The doctors make their daily round there. They examine patients and prescribe different medicines and treatments.

Whatever school years may be, they remain in our hearts forever. The word "School" always reminds us of our childhood and youth, of close and dear people. The school where I study is situated not far from my house... It is a modern four-stored building of all typical design.

Experiments are carried all school celebrations, meetings, performances and gatherings are held in the Assembly Hall Our school is a specialized English school and children begin studying English from the first form.
