Scene 2

LIGHTS: Loft lights up. Fireplace down.

Enter Stazi the wicked stepsister, Drizella the wicked stepsister and Florence the wicked step-cousin on to the loft.

STAZI: You are awake and we are not having breakfast?

CINDERELLA: Most kind sister, Stazi, I am just now awake.

DRIZELLA: Is this any kind of hospitality to show our cousin Florence?

CINDERELLA: Most fair sister, Drizella, it is my pleasure to show our cousin hospitality.

FLORANCE: Do not call me your cousin. We are not related.

CINDERELLA: My father married your Aunt. That makes him your Uncle and I your cousin.

FLORANCE: Your father is dead. Therefore, he is not my Uncle.

DRIZELLA: Dead.

STAZI: Certainly dead.

FLORANCE: You are a cleaning girl.

DRIZELLA: By the generosity of our mother…

FLORANCE: And my Aunt…

STAZI: The Lady Tremaine.

CINDERELLA: But she is my mother too.

STAZI: Is she?

CINDERELLA: She married my father.

DRIZELLA picks up the music box.

DRIZELLA: What is this?

CINDERELLA: My music box.

STAZI: My music box.

CINDERELLA: My mother gave it to me.

DRIZELLA: Your mother died.

CINDERELLA: (smiling) Yes, and that music box is all I have of her.

STAZI: You are mistaken. That is my music box.

CINDERELLA: My mother gave it to me.

DRIZELLA: Did not you just say our mother is your mother now?

CINDERELLA: Yes, but…

STAZI takes the music box from DRIZELLA.

STAZI: Now our mother has given it to me.

FLORANCE, STAZI and DRIZELLA laugh.

FLORENCE/STAZI/DRIZELLA: Hahahaha!

CINDERELLA: That is mine.

CINDERELLA moves to take it from STAZI. DRIZELLA and FLORENCE get in her way. STAZI holds the music box over the rail offering to drop it to the floor.

CINDERELLA: Please, no.

STAZI: Is it mine?

CINDERELLA: It is yours.

STAZI: Then I can drop it if I so wish?

CINDERELLA: Please.

STAZI: Tell our cousin Florence your name.

DRIZELLA: The name we gave you.

CINDERELLA: Cinderella.

STAZI: Why do we call you Cinderella?

CINDERELLA: Because my dress…

DRIZELLA: Your only dress.

CINDERELLA: My only dress is covered and burned by the ash and cinders from the fire.

FLORENCE: I like it, Cinderella.

LADY TREMAINE enters the loft. She is dressed for the day.

LT: Cinderella!

FLORENCE, DRIZELLA and STAZI move away. STAZI puts the music box behind her back.

CINDERELLA: (bowing) Lady Tremaine.

LT: Why are you standing around talking when no one has eaten and nothing has been cleaned?

DRIZELLA: She slept late. Too cozy by the fire I think.

STAZI: Maybe she should not be allowed to sleep by a fire.

LT: (to STAZI) You think that is clever? When she is sick are you going to do her work? Is your silly sister going to do her work? What about your worthless cousin? Do you think she will do Cinderella’s work? No. Leave us.

FLORENCE, DRIZELLA and STAZI exit loft.

CINDRELLA: Thank you.

LT: Don’t speak to me. Your voice annoys me. See to food.

LT crosses downstairs using SR stairs.

EIGHT enters loft and crosses to CINDERELLA. He hands her the music box.

LIGHTS: Cross fade DC.
