Level 1 - Frequently Asked Questions

What level of experience do I need?

You should have experience of working on a bike, for example you may have fixed a puncture, replaced brake pads and changed a gear cable. This course is not suitable for people who have no experience of working on bikes – we run unaccredited maintenance courses for people who need to gain experience before signing up to a City & Guilds course:

What is the course structure?

This is a two day course, run on two consecutive days.

Other formats are available, at additional cost, for groups of learners who would like or need more time – give us a call to discuss your needs on 0117 353 4580.

Do I need to attend every day?

Yes, it is essential to attend both days of teaching. No exceptions.

How is the course assessed?

You will be assessed on each individual unit of the course as and when the material is covered. The course is carefully designed to ensure there is ample time to introduce, teach and practice each component. Each individual completes a practical assessment and a short written assessment for each unit. You must pass all assessments to gain your qualification.

Which qualification will I achieve?

City & Guilds “Level 1Award in Cycle Mechanics” (3902-18). This course is a stepping stone towards the Level 2 qualification which is the recognised industry standard for professional bike mechanics.

You will receive a certificate in the post from City & Guilds after successful completion of the course. Please note: City & Guilds charge £44 to re-issue certificates, so keep yours safe!

What happens if I fail an assessment?

To gain the qualification you need to pass all 4 units. If you miss a day, you will be awarded the units you complete - but not the full Level 1 Certificate. It is un-likely you will be able to re-do failed/missed units during the 2-day course. You can come back for additional tuition/re-assessmentoutside the course. This will cost £25 per hour.
