TEACHERS’ NOTES – Personal Education Plan

Introduction

To introduce the lesson, explain to the students that:

  • What the PEP is all about.
  • It should be filled with reminders of your experiences, both in school and in the community, that have helped you develop your academic and interpersonal skills.
  • It should show how these experiences have contributed to shaping your career plans.
  • It should help you to remember what you have done and to reflect on what you want to accomplish in the future.
  • It should clarify your understanding of your interests, abilities, and aspiration. Remember a successful portfolio is based on the collect, select, reflect model.
  • Collect all your items for the portfolio.
  • Select the pieces for your final portfolio at the end of the year.
  • Reflect on your selections.
What to put in the portfolio
  • Evidence of progress toward goals – certificates, report cards.
  • Items from out of classroom experiences – photos, pictures, video, or audio tapes, written reports, articles, letters of reference, works experience.
  • Products of activities done with the class – records of presentations.
  • Items that demonstrate accomplishments – badges, certificates, letters of recommendation.
  • Items that show skill, interests, and attitudes – personal inventories, photographs.
  • Items from the careers education classes throughout the school year.
  • Evidence of reflection – journals, evaluation checklists.
Managing your Personal Education Profile

Your portfolio of items that you will put together in the future will be a model for similar collections that you will make in the future (when you leave school) as your career experiences expand. Collecting some of the items above will help for future career goals for the future. Give the students their own binder and plastic sleeves and tell them this will be there PEP. Explain where they will keep it. Most important is that all items are kept together and organised.

Questions
  • Did everyone put the same thing down?
  • Why not?
  • Were some parts of the worksheets easier than others?
  • Why was this the case?
  • What would you have put as answers if you were in younger grades?
  • What do you think you might put when you are in grade 10?
  • Why do you think the answers will be different in grade 10 to now.
