Legal Aspects of the Green Economy Workshop

Thursday 10 – Friday 11 November 2011

University of Sheffield

Professor Duncan French, co-rapporteur of the International Law Association Committee on International Law on Sustainable Development and Director of the Sheffield Centre for International and European Law (SCIEL) is pleased to announce the two-day high-level workshop on “Legal Aspects of a Green Economy” to be held at the University of Sheffield in November 2011.

The workshop will allow attendees to consider many of the key themes of the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio +20) and to debate what legal rules and processes will be necessary to ensure that the global movement towards a green economy is based on fundamental ideas of the rule of law, sustainable development and poverty eradication.

Specific topics will include: (i) energy, climate change and the transition to a low carbon economy, (ii) investment and trade: tools for the green economy, (iii) domestic and international frameworks for sustainable development, (iv) natural resources: biodiversity, ecosystems and fisheries, and (v) poverty eradication, human rights and the green economy. Each session will be introduced by a speaker, but it should be emphasised that the purpose of the workshop is to allow as full and open debate as possible.

There is no fee for attendees, and SCIEL will provide refreshments during the workshop. A dinner will be organised on Thursday 10 November at a local restaurant, though the cost will unfortunately have to be borne by attendees.

For those who wish to attend, the organisers would be grateful for a formal indication of attendance by 30 September 2011. Advice on accommodation can be sought from Sarah Beedham (). Further details of the workshop, including a draft programme, will be sent to attendees in October. Please also pass this form on to relevant research students.
