Case Study 1: How can we “Build a Better Conference”?

ULiveandLearn online communities support and sustain both the activity and collaborative energy of any online group, including corporate customers, special interest group members, employees and students.

The LC3product offers a highly effective tool for both onlineconferencesand venue-based conferences by supporting promotional events and activities that precede or follow the live events. As a supportive Collaborative Tool, our clients use customized conference communities to produce a variety of live events including interactive web casts, teleconferences and video sessions to bring key speakers, sponsors and other appropriate participants together. As a conference resource, speakers, experts, or organizers can use the discussion boards to facilitate pre, during and post conversation about conference themes and use the full set of tools to create multi dimensional resource libraries. It is also possible to offer vendors an opportunity to create showcases previewing their conference activities.

We were asked to help a client “Build a Better Conference”

A multinational organization asked us to “Build a Better Conference”by extending the reach of their annual conference and creating ongoing collaborative programs and resources for their membership. ULiveandLearn developed an incremental proposal for easy implementation and scalability.

Step One - The keynote speaker at the annual conference will deliver the presentation both to the live audience and to a virtual audience. The online audience joins in simply by connecting to the webcast – where the real-time audio and presentation is streamed online. As an added benefit, the online audience can participate via text chat where their comments and questions can be are visible to everyone. The entire experience is recorded for ongoing access, becoming a valuable post-conference learning object.

Pre-conference webcasts (also recorded for publicity and marketing) were also scheduled both to generate increased total participation in the live event and as a press-related event. Whenever possible, ULL captures the program for inclusion in a resource library or for repackaging with other learning objects.

Step Two- A customized CollaborationCenter is launched to establish a base for ongoing organizational programs, group activities, resource management and special events. The CollaborationCenter becomes the venue for supporting many live and virtual activities. A centralized location for all content, marketing and event management facilitates increased user access and interaction.

Step Three-Throughout the year, organized online conferences and workshops are offered as both a membership benefit and as a revenue-producing program. Launched from the CollaborationCenter, a variety of live events including interactive webcasts, teleconferences and video sessions are available. When feasible, hybrid sessions combining live and virtual audiences are offered.

Programs are added easily and take advantage of opportunities for special events, group meetings or other just-in-time activities.

Step Four- The next annual live conference will take advantage of the online CollaborationCenterwhich becomes a conference resource, with speakers, experts, and organizers using the discussion boards to facilitate conversation about conference themes before, during and after the event. The full set of tools creates multidimensional resource libraries, meeting rooms, group events and preview sessions. It is also possible to offer vendors an opportunity to create showcases previewing their conference activities.

Most importantly, the membership is actively participating in ongoing programs and has become increasingly more interested in organizational events, including the annual conference.

When the solutions seem unlimited, ULiveandLearn focuses on solutions that work for today and in the future.

Case Study 2: Making an Online Journal Come Alive

ULiveandLearn has served as webcast producer for the multimedia programming of the online journal The Technology Source. ULL has provided event production, webcast technology, registration support, and marketing for all Technology Source events.

A unique feature of The Technology Source journal has been the opportunity for readers to participate with the article authors in live online webcastswhich are branded asAuthor Forums. All webcasts have been recorded for inclusion in an electronic archive library.

The Technology Source ceased publication in December 2003. Partnered with ULiveandLearn, the Technology Source’s founding editor has launched a next-generation journal, Innovate, which presents an opportunity to strengthen the interactive components of the journal and creates new opportunities for technology-driven collaboration. These include:

  • Innovate Live Webcasts – produced on the Macromedia Breeze platform
  • Establishment of the Innovate Live Forums
  • Development of a comprehensive User Portal
  • Packaging of the webcasts with supportive materials
  • Development of an annual lecture series or online conference

The Innovate Live Portal is an opportunity to package andpresent all webcast events, communication and open collaboration in an integrated environment, while supporting ongoing interaction with the articles, authors and participants.

Webcasts: Webcasts are the engines that drive Innovate Live. Beginning in 2004, the webcast platform features have been upgraded to include video as well as streaming audio, options for either presentation or enhanced discussion formats, and support for high-end flash graphics, presentations and screen sharing.

Most importantly, participants can more actively participate in the webcasts via immediate VoIP participation and content sharing.

Innovate Live Forums:This online environment offers a powerful tool set for Innovate membership activities and programs. The flexibility of the center provides an accessible online resource of educational information and activities, discussion forums, libraries of resources, links, articles, documents and images, direct linkage to webcasts and a fully e-mail enabled communication tool. The center also extends existing web-based resources by acting as a home for collaborative virtual exhibitions, and ongoing exchange of research, professional collaboration and outreach beyond the traditional reach of most web-based program.

Innovate is a bimonthly, peer-reviewed online periodical published by NovaSoutheasternUniversity. It focuses on the creative use of information technology (IT) to enhance educational processes in all sectors (K-12, college and university, corporate, government).

Innovate is dedicated to presenting articles via the most dynamic, interactive technology that is available. For each article, the journal provides an online discussion forum, an interactive webcast that connects authors and readers, and a "read-related" feature that links visitors to articles on similar topics. A multimedia classifieds section and journal editions in multiple languages are both in the planning stages.

Theory, practice, vision, and commentary all have a place in Innovate. Articles generally fall into one of four main categories:

AppApAlied Research and Assessment: Evidence related to the extent, effectiveness, and the impact of IT use in educational and professional settings

Practice: Reports on innovative uses of IT in specific environments, with notable results

Development: Advance information on the newest IT projects, programs, tools, and trends

Commentary: Critical reflections on the changing nature of teaching, learning, and training with IT in the twenty-first century

Innovate-Live Sessions

ULiveandLearn will produce and host Innovate Live, a series of interactive webcasts addressing the topic of each article with authors and readers. Innovate Live Forums will offer integrated community collaboration and live interaction. For a preview, visit
