leads/Health disparities tRACK pOLICY & rEQUIREMENTS

  • Attend 6 of the LEADS IMPACT seminar series per academic year (Year I and II students only)
  • Both spring and fall courses (NOTE: Students may take the LEADS courses and not participate in the full track.)
  • LEADS summer internship including leadership curriculum
  • All track meetings held during integrated clinicians’ course (ICC) sessions
  • Mentored Scholarly Activity (MSA) on a topic related to leadership, advocacy, public health, health disparities, or community health (subject to approval by the LEADS Executive Committee). FOR NON-MD STUDENTS, COMPLETION OF THE SUMMER INTERNSHIP WILL SUFFICE. THE PROJECT DOES NOT HAVE TO MEET THE SOM MSA CRITERIA.

Successful completion of track components will be determined by the LEADS Executive Committee and students will receive special recognition as part of commencement ceremonies and will be able to list completion of the track on their CV and residency application materials.

LEADS Track Criteria

The LEADS Track is offered to first year students. Demonstration of previous leadership or advocacy work is helpful, but not required. Selection will be based on the following criteria:

  • Motivation to do advocacy work
  • Commitment to leadership and advocacy
  • Be in good academic standing (completion of any course remediation prior to starting the LEADS Summer Internship)
  • Ability to complete all necessary components of the LEADS Track
  • Summer project/advocacy interests
  • Strong organizational skills
