LCGB Overseas Study Tour 04/2014 / Summer Steam Denmark and South Sweden / July 2014

A programme has been formulated for a 2014 tour to Denmark and South Sweden. This would be a rare opportunity to capture most of the steam-operated museum railways in Denmark in one hit and, with a short visit to two of the best operations in the south of Sweden added-in, it should make for a great summer holiday break with friends and steam. Maximum use would be made of scheduled steam operations to keep the price as reasonable as possible, but we would endeavour to include photographic (and travel) arrangements on all railways. These arrangements include full or short charters and by these means, a varied day-to-day programme including both standard gauge and narrow gauge locations, pure museum railways and scheduled ‘main-line’ type operation should be able to be provided.

In order to give maximum flexibility and convenience the tour is based on the use of self-drive vehicles for transport between systems and also for linesiding. It should be possible to use people-carrier type transport (which your tour manager would drive) but these do not offer so much flexibility as the smaller saloon car. The tour will be suitable for riders and photographers alike.

For members who wish,it should be possible to book the main part of the tour covering Denmark alone, joining the group on Sunday 6 July and also, participants could if desired, extend their tour for general tourism on into other parts of Scandinavia and Pomeranian Germany by use of rail and ferries etc. For those with work leave issues, we should be able to work around that, but please liaise independently. This then is our programme:

Note:

1.Distances and travel times are not excessive and time should be available to experience other aspects of the country. Driving will be a pleasure on the fine road network. We have no plans for excessively early starts, or late arrivals.

2.We plan to use For Focus Estates (or equal for 4 people) or Mercedes Viano (having 8 persons within and I will drive) We will need volunteer drivers who are going to have to guarantee the fully-insured vehicle with their card. For this element, a varying price structure is proposed depending on car-type, passenger, or main driver.

3.All railway visits are arranged in good faith, and we will make every effort to ensure a steam loco is available. In the event of an unforeseen failure (or a steam ban) an alternative arrangement may need to be substituted.

4.I use basic e-mail for updates etc. Please, get to use someone’s address for your incoming correspondence.

5.The tour will operate with low margins in good faith based on supplier’s quotations. If these suppliers fail to honour their quotations, the club reserves the right to raise prices accordingly.
