UNIT TITLE / Apply stains and clear timber finishes
APPLICATION / This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to apply stains and clear timber finishes to different material surfaces, including previously stained or finished timber, to form a protective and decorative finish. It includes task planning, preparation of the work area and materials, staining of bare timber, application of clear finishes and completion of clean-up activities.
It includes working with others as a member of a team.

1. / Prepare for task. / 1.1 / Identify and confirm task instructionswith supervisor or client.
1.2 / Select stain and application method based on timber type and size, on durability and aesthetic requirements and on supervisor or client directions.
1.3 / Identify and follow legislative and organisational requirements for workplace health and safety (WHS) and environmental protection.
1.4 / Assess safety signage and barricade requirements and install accordingly.
1.5 / Select tools and equipment, check for serviceability and report and rectify any faults.
1.6 / Calculate materials quantities.
1.7 / Obtain and prepare materials andposition ready for use.
2. / Prepare materials and application area. / 2.1 / Set up work area to suit application system being used.
2.2 / Mask off or cover surfaces adjoining application area.
2.3 / Ensure adequate ventilation to application area to maintain a safe environment.
2.4 / Ensure application area remains free of dust and foreign matter.
2.5 / Strip existing stained or finished surfaces using appropriate techniques.
3. / Stain bare timber surface. / 3.1 / Prepare stain in appropriate proportions to achieve required consistency in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations.
3.2 / Apply stain to surface.
3.3 / Select, colour match and mix wood filler and putty and apply to timber.
4. / Apply clear finishes. / 4.1 / Apply coats of selected clear finish to achieve required level of opacity, finish and sheen in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations.
4.2 / Allow drying time between coats in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations.
4.3 / Cure clear finish surfaces in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations.
5. / Clean-up work area. / 5.1 / Seal unused materials and store in accordance with standard material handling practices and techniques.
5.2 / Clean painting tools and equipment with appropriate solutions and store safely in compliance with manufacturers’ specifications.
5.3 / Dispose of paint waste, water and solvents used in cleaning painting equipment in an environmentally sustainable manner and in accordance with relevant legislative requirements.
5.4 / Clear work area and dispose of, reuse and recycle materials in accordance with legislative and organisational requirements for WHS and environmental protection.

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must have the following language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills:

PERFORMANCE EVIDENCE
A person who demonstrates competency in this unit must apply stain to one previously treated surface and clear finish to another. The surfaces must be at least two square metres in area or two metres in length.
In doing this, they must:
  • comply with legislative and organisational requirements for WHS and environmental protection
  • use tools and equipment safely and efficiently
  • communicate and work effectively with others
  • complete tasks to specification

KNOWLEDGE EVIDENCE
To be competent in this unit, a person must demonstrate knowledge of:
  • legislative and organisational requirements for WHS and environmental protection:
  • risk assessment and management
  • safety data sheets (SDS)
  • personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • management of dust, noise and liquid and solid waste
  • processes for stripping stained or finished surfaces and colour-matching and filling surfaces prior to applying stains and clear timber finishes
  • processes for applying stains and clear timber finishes to walls, doors, floors and other surfaces in sound or unsound condition, including natural timber, medium density fibreboard (MDF), ply, particle board, panelling and previously coated or treated timber. These processes include the use of:
  • brush
  • paint pad (sponge)
  • rag
  • roller
  • spray
  • the types, characteristics, uses and limitations of stains, finishes and other materials:
  • grain fillers (water, spirit or oil)
  • putty
  • single pack clear finish
  • timber stains (water, spirit, oil or slightly pigmented varnish/polyurethane)
  • acrylic clear and two-pack epoxy clear, shellac, tinting agents and waxes
  • clear finishes for timber, including lacquers and two-pack polyurethane
  • flat
  • full gloss
  • satin
  • semi-gloss
  • alternative and natural coatings, including low- and zero-VOC (volatile organic compounds)
  • the use, limitations and maintenance of tools and equipment used to apply stains and clear timber finishes
  • processes required to clean-up work areas and reuse, recycle and dispose of liquid and solid waste

ASSESSMENT CONDITIONS
Assessors must satisfy the requirements for assessors contained in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations.
Assessment of performance must be undertaken in the workplace or in a simulated workplace environment. Tasks are to be performed to the level of proficiency and within the time limits that would be expected in a workplace.
Assessors are responsible for ensuring that the person demonstrating competency has access to:
  • task instructions
  • tools, equipment and materials
  • manufacturers’ specifications and safety data sheets (SDS) for coatings and other materials
