September 4, 2015

Current Events: We will still be PALS testing on Tuesday through Friday during the reading block: thus, your child will not have reading homework. Also, I am sending home 2 of the Volunteer/Mentor Application forms that need to be completed and returned for our records for anyone coming to have lunch with your child, helping in the classroom, or chaperoning a school field trip. Let me know if you need more for other family members. This is just another measure that is needed to keep our students safe.

Language Arts: In Handwriting the children have been learning, about letter spacing and proper strokes for lower case letters that are tall this week: f. b. and l while reviewing and evaluating a, e, o, d, g, c, and s strokes. They are really progressing nicely with using the lines on the paper to uniformly size their letters! Thanks for your help at home with encouraging the use of correct letter strokes when writing.

Math: I have been doing the Universal Math Screenings during the Math block of time and regular Math instruction will continue next week with addition. I have attached your child’s IXL username and passwords. Your child can access this site on our school homepage and practice math skills from home to develop fluency in math. The site is: www.ixl.com/signin/augusta.

Social Studies: Plus, we talked about the job of an author and illustrator in our discussion of Eric Carle. Then, we looked at the many different books that he has written and illustrated.

Science: Our noses know the smell of many things. The children had fun guessing the scents on the cotton balls. We have listened to different sounds to match with sound cubes to practice our sense of hearing. We used our sense of smell to guess the scent on the cotton balls. We will start a unit about the life cycle of butterflies.
