2011-2012

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I would like to welcome you to another exciting year here at Lakeland High School. There are many academic and extracurricular activities available to your son or daughter. In addition, the High School Guidance and Counseling Department exists to serve your student, helping them to achieve their goals, from personal to academic. The following resources are found in the counseling department for this exact purpose:

1.  SCHOLARSHIP ROOM: A multi media research and resource room available for students to fill out scholarship and pot-secondary institution applications and essays, including computer access, local and statewide scholarship applications, and research table. In addition, it holds typewriters to type up scholarships when needed, administrative tools, from a hole punch machine to telephone access. University, college, technical school, and military resources are also available.

2.  QUIET CUBE: Specifically designed for students who need a quiet place to concentrate and focus, this eight desk facility is available daily for students for test taking, studying, research, and homework.

3.  COLLEGE VISITS: Admission representatives from post-high school institutions are scheduled to visit Lakeland High School throughout the year, providing information on admissions, university life, scholarships, financial aid, and dorm life.

4.  TESTING: The ACT (10-12 grade), ASVAB (11th grade), PSAT/NMSQT (taken according to GPA, MAP, ACT scores), PLAN (10th grade), MAP (3-8th grade), and EOC (9-12th grade) are taken throughout the year to measure academic performance and career slants through standardized testing measures.

5.  INDIVIDUAL and GROUP COUNSELING: The counseling office is here to help students process through areas of concern. From depression, to developing successful study habits, to dealing with a divorce, students have open-door access to the counselor to deal with these and other difficulties through individual and group counseling, facilitated by referral and direct appointment.

6.  College and CAREER FAIR: A bi-annual gathering of universities, colleges, technical schools, and military venues that cater to questions, information gathering, and to familiarize the students to various post-secondary institutions, held annually (2011 will not have a career fair).

7.  CLASSROOM GUIDANCE: Classroom instruction and information delivery of various issues faced by students in grades 7-12 including depression, divorce issues, study habits, peer pressure, bullying, school orientation, harassment, anger, and other mental, social, and psychological hurdles students face. In addition, goal setting, achievement, career development, career tracking, scheduling graduation preparation, and test taking and interpretation is addressed, among others.

8.  WEBSITE ACCESS TO COUNSELING RESOURCES: Clicking on the Junior High /High School Counseling Center link on the Lakeland RIII School Website will give you direct access to many resources available from the High School Guidance and Counseling department here at Lakeland High School.
