LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
JOB TITLE: LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
GRADE: SCALE SCP 7 - 15
PURPOSE OF JOB:
To provide assistance to Technical staff and Teachers throughout a broad range of assigned duties under the daily supervision of suitably qualified/experienced Technical Staff.

MAIN ACTIVITIES:
To perform the following activities under the appropriate individual supervision of suitably qualified/experienced Technical Staff:
· Issue of chemicals, apparatus, equipment, books, stationery and materials as authorised.
· Safe disposal of chemical preparations, toxic substances and animal/plant specimens, including culture plates in accordance with relevant Codes of Practice.
· Maintenance and care of plant and animal experiments as required.
· Requisition of consumables or equipment as specifically authorised to maintain working stocks.
· In the event of spillage/breakage, ensure in liaison with the School Caretaker/Senior Technician that laboratory floors, walls, benches, equipment and fittings are properly cleaned.
· Carry out safety checks in accordance with instructions and agreed Codes of Practice.
· Assisting with exhibitions and displays for open days, festivals, school plays, fetes, etc.
· Assisting with annual stock-taking operations as required.
· Maintaining adequate levels of consumable materials as specifically authorised, preparing same and distributing to pupils as instructed.
· Construct, test, collect and clean demonstration class and examination apparatus up to ‘A’ level standard.
· Building teachers aids, e.g. light boxes, feeler boxes, grid covers, etc.
· Preparation of raw materials to specification for classwork and practical examinations.
· Attending appreciation courses under the direction of the Senior Laboratory Technician to ensure compliance with current Health & Safety legislation and nationally/locally agreed regulations.
· Attending recognised academic courses covering the development of technical skills throughout all science discipline and modern laboratory practice.
· Any other duties appropriate to the grade of the post and the level of competence demonstrated by the individual postholder as may be delegated by the Senior Laboratory Technician from time to time.

3 GCSEs Grade C or above (or equivalent) including Science
Ability to show an ongoing interest in Science
Ability to work methodically and pay attention to detail
Good communication and listening skills to understand requirements of students and colleagues. / An awareness of health and safety procedures and safeguarding procedures
Enthusiastic about supporting all aspects of the science curriculum, hard working and able to show initiative and solve problems
Willing to work as part of a team, with the ability to be flexible and adaptable, as you are likely to work for a number of people on different projects
