L: Lam Ka Yiu, James S:CaiYuejun, Shuranx E: Yam YeeWah, Elfa

L: / Hey Shuranx, what happened to you yesterday? You just kept sending me photos with captions.
S: / Oh you mean that ‘I know that feel bro’ one? We call them reaction images (網絡搞笑圖像).
L: / What is it? What does it mean?
E: / ‘Reaction images’ are products (產物)of the 21st century. When Internet forums started to get popular, these ‘reaction images’ first appeared in a local internet forum called Golden and the trend spread fast. ‘Reaction images’ are pictures with or without captions that portrayspecific emotions to respond (回應) to something that has been said.
S: / There’re basically two main types of ‘reaction images’, captured ones andphotoshopped ones. Most of the captured ones are from TV shows that already have captions on them.
E: / The photoshopped ones are mostly from TV shows, videos or even photos of their own friends. Very often, these photos do not have any captions, so they, the netizens, use photoshop or other photo editing tools to add captions or make funny effects on them, such as swapping their faces. Sometimes, adding the captions is even optional(可選擇的).
S: / Speaking of(當談到)‘I know that feel bro’ image, ‘bro’ is slang that comes from the short form of ‘brother’. In the image, two bald men embrace(擁抱) each other expressionlessly. We use it when we agree with someone else’s feelings and it roughly(大約) means ‘I feel the same’. See? You don’t even need any captions to understand what it means.
L: / Using ‘reaction images’ to communicate with your friends is so convenient. You don’t need to type at all, because you know some people are kind of (有一點)slow typists and if they use reaction images instead of typing a bunch of words, they could save a lot of time. Also, using reaction images is more interesting. Sometimes using these silly images is better than plain text. For example, I send you a reaction image of myself lying almost dead besides a pile of homework with the caption ‘Why don’t you kill me?’. Wouldn’t it be much more interesting than just telling you I’m struggling with loads of homework?
S: / Hm…….. Yeah. Also, a reaction image shows the creativity of people. People can be creative with it. It has even become a unique culture from Golden forum.
E: / But still, sending ‘reaction images’ is not too good sometimes. Some of them contain personal attacks and insults(侮辱), while others are filled with foul language. When you see them and use them all the time, you’ll get so used to it or even say those bad words out loud yourself.
L: / So, using reaction images too often is not a good thing, right? By the way, I got hundreds of reaction images from you guys yesterday… I think you should just stop it.
