Title / Ride thoroughbred racehorses in pacework as instructed by the trainer

Purpose / This unit standard is intended for people who are required to ride pacework on public training tracks in a thoroughbred racing context, report on the horse’s performance and demonstrate understanding of training principles and technologies.
People will be working under limited supervision with responsibility for their work routines.

Explanatory notes

1 Demonstration of competency must be consistent with:

·  Workplace procedures

·  Racetrack Bylaws

·  The New Zealand Rules of Racing applicable to the role

·  Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992

·  Code of Welfare: Horses and Donkeys available at http://www.mpi.govt.nz.

2 Candidates must demonstrate competency in a commercial business operation under normal working conditions and undertaken on a public training track.

3 A copy of the relevant Racetrack Bylaws is required for this unit standard. These can be obtained from the Secretary of the racing club where horses are working.

4 Pacework is horse ridden at canter.

5 The safety gear worn by the rider must meet the standards set by New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing, obtainable from New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing.

6 Competency must be achieved on both experienced and inexperienced horses. A rider must demonstrate competency consistently when riding an experienced horse solo and in company, and an inexperienced horse solo and in company.

7 In the context of this unit standard, understanding means that there should be evidence of a learners’ thorough comprehension of a topic. A learner with a good understanding of a topic should have applied, or should be able to apply what they have learnt to a workplace situation and will be able to alter their practices to the different contexts they are applying their learning to. Assessors should be confident that the learners’ understanding is embedded in their practices and behaviour.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Ride horses with a range of experience, both solo and in company of other horses at pacework for exercise as instructed by the trainer.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Receives and confirms instructions.

1.2 Adjusts gear to ensure designated action and safety for horse and rider.

1.3 Warms up and rides the horse confidently at the pace, distance, and time as specified by the trainer, with the horse under control.

1.4 Encourages the horse to perform at pacework with the horse balanced and relaxed, using voice, hands and heels as required.

1.5 Rides the horse and conducts self, according to the Rules of Racing.

Outcome 2

Pull horse up and return to the trainer after the workout.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Pulls the horse up gradually on completion of the workout.

2.2 Leaves the track with the horse under control.

2.3 Returns the horse to the trainer.

Outcome 3

Verbally report on the way the horse completed the workout

Evidence requirements

3.1 Reports the way in which the horse completed the workout clearly, concisely and professionally.

Outcome 4

Demonstrate understanding of training principles, and technologies that are commonly in use to aid training.

Evidence requirements

4.1 Describes the principles of training to improve a horse’s performance.

4.2 Describe principles of technologies commonly used to aid training.

Range evidence is required for at least two technologies.
