This is aFullTime Position: Detention Counselor/ CBT Unit Counselor
General Job Summary:
This position requires the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of youth involved in the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice system. Screening new intakes in the Mahoning County Juvenile Detention Center. Referrals to and communication with appropriate community agencies for the safety and security of the youth, in addition to the continuity of their care. Screening and assessing potential youth for the Mahoning County Juvenile Court’s Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Unit (CBT). Facilitates intensive individual, family and group counseling to youth placed on the CBT Unit. Prepares written court reports and oral testimony for court appearances and maintains current documentation. Attendance and participation in treatment team, Clinical Services staff and Detention meetings. Monitoring youth placed on suicide watch in the Detention Center.
Additional Job Duties:
-Crisis Intervention on an as needed basis
-Ability to be on call and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
-Ability to administer various assessment tools
-Provide and organize group counseling for adolescents
-Provide referrals to Mahoning County Children’s Services Board (abuse, neglect, etc...)
-Provide individual, family and group counseling
-Serve as primary therapist for assigned caseload.
-Serve as active member of a multidisciplinary team.
-Provide training for Detention employees on materials relevant to position (suicide prevention, sexual abuse, etc...)
-Maintain current licensure with the Ohio Counselor Social Worker Marriage and Family Therapist Board
-Maintain clients files in accordance with OCSWMFTB and MCJJDC policies
-Ability to work with diverse and detained population
-General knowledge of Microsoft programs
-Ability to work some non-traditional hours
-Other duties as assigned by Director of Clinical Services
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s Level, Independently Licensed Clinical Counselor (LPCC)or Independently Licensed Social Worker (LISW) by the State of Ohio (in good standing).
  • Knowledge of the juvenile justice and child systems as well as understanding of basic court functions and procedures.
  • Knowledge of community resources and services for youth and their families.
  • A valid Ohio driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Computer Skills Microsoft Office, Data Entry
Unusual Working Conditions:
Requires travel; may be assigned to high crime areas and/or risk of violence, communicable diseases, On 24 hour call.
