Dear Students and Parents/Guardians

Welcome to Civics and Economics at Knightdale High School! I am so excited to have the opportunity to teach you this year! This special section of Civics and Economics for students in the Knightdale Academy of Environmental Studies (KAES) will be specially focused to coincide with the academy curriculum. Civics & Economics is required for graduation. By working together, we can ensure that C&E is a positive LEARNING experience for all. Class activities will be varied and material will be presented in several forms, so that each student will have a chance to build his/her own understanding of political, legal, and economic systems. This course will follow the new NC Standard Course of Study & the Common Core State Standards.

The CLASSROOM RULES are simple,

1)  Be respectful 2) Be on time and 3) Always try your best

You can expect me to follow all WCPSS & KHS policies and procedures, including the KHS Professional Code, for example:

·  “Sweep & Keep” tardy policy

·  PB Works website

·  Posting updated grades

·  Knight time

·  Common Passes

For this class students will need the following materials

·  3 ring binder (1.5 recommended)

·  Sticky Notes

·  Paper

·  Pencils, Pens & Highlighters

·  A marble notebook for bellwork

·  A file folder

Donations of the following classroom supplies would be greatly appreciated: Markers, Colored Pencils, Construction Paper, Glue, scissors, Rulers, Tissues, Hand Sanitizer.

For every class the bellwork question, essential question and agenda will be posted on the board. Students should read over it so they know what academic goals they are expected to achieve. They should monitor their understanding & ask questions during class to help them reach this target. I will also include an outline of the entire unit including due dates on the board so students get into the habit of self-monitoring. My pbworks page (kturner4khs.pbworks.com) will be updated weekly and will also include the class agenda for the day.

Remind 101: Text (708)-808-4256 with the message @kaesc.

Course material (all notes, assignments, and handouts for this class) should be kept in the students’ binder dated and numbered. At the end of each unit students will be asked to put all their work into a file folder which will remain in the classroom. This will make it easier for students to review for the final exam. These file folders will be graded periodically and serve as a portfolio of learning in Civics and Economic Honors. I am happy to help any student learn organization – it is a VERY IMPORTANT LIFE SKILL!

This course will be graded according to the following system:

Tests/Projects = 40% Document Work = 20%

Quizzes (includes BW and NBK) = 15% Homework/Classwork = 25%

The final course grade will be determined according to WCPSS policy. The final exam will be an NC Final Exam created by the state of North Carolina and will count as 20% of the final grade.

Late assignments will follow the KAES late assignment policy. If a student is absent or “Swept or Kept’ due to being tardy, they are responsible for obtaining the work from either a classmate or the class website and turning it in. Students who were present the day an assignment was due have until the start of the following class period to turn it in without any reductions. Otherwise they will be marked down 5 points. They have until the end of the unit to turn in any missing assignments for a grade reduction. Any missing assignments not completed will result in a 0.

Plagiarism/Cheating: “Any student who engages in or attempts to engage in plagiarism, falsification, violation of software copyright laws, or violations of computer access may be subject to disciplinary action. Cheating includes giving or receiving any unauthorized assistance on academic work. Plagiarism includes copying the language, structure, or idea of another and representing it as one’s own work” (Knightdale Parent Student Handbook p.23). Students who are caught plagiarizing or cheating will receive an automatic zero.

Absentee Policy- Students who are absent from class either due to sickness or a school sponsored event are responsible to find out what work they missed, and making it up within 3 days of returning to class to receive full credit. I will work with students who are on extended sick leave to make sure they do not fall behind.

Knight Time- Any student with below a 76.5 average in this class will be required to attend Knight Time with me on Tuesday after second period for remediation. I will notify students the prior Friday if they are required to attend remediation. This is also an excellent opportunity for any students to attend if they are missing work.

Common Passes- Students in order to leave the classroom must request a common pass from me. Any students who found in the hallway during class without a common pass with be “swept and kept.”

PowerSchool: I will update PowerSchool weekly so both students and parents can keep track of grades.

Tutoring is available:

·  Before school every day 7:15-7:50

·  After school Monday, Tuesday, and Thursdays 3:05-4:30

·  Knight Time

·  By appointment

I welcome your feedback, suggestions, comments, or concerns at any time. Email () is the fastest way to reach me, but please feel free to call me at school (919-217-5350) and leave a message and I will return your call as soon as possible.

I am really looking forward to working hard and learning a lot TOGETHER this year!
Sincerely,

Ms. Kayla Turner
