The ‘Ollie Schollie’ Nurse Practitioner Scholarship is offered jointly by the Australian College of Nursing (ACN) and the Australian College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP).

This educational grant is offered for an endorsed Nurse Practitioner for the purpose of growing the body of knowledge on the nurse practitioner role in Australia.

The scholarship is named in memory of Olwyn Johnston who was appointed as the first practicing nurse practitioner in Australia (NSW) in 2001. Olwyn died in 2006 but her life contribution to remote nursing will be remembered by her radio call sign “by Golly….it’s Ollie”.

This Scholarship is valued at $5,000.

Eligibility criteria checklist

  • The applicant must be a Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) endorsed Nurse Practitioner residing in Australia.
  • A current Fellow or Member of ACN or ACNP and have been one for the past three years
  • Working at least 0.6 FTE In a nurse practitioner role
  • The grant may be used support educational activities including:
  • Professional Development courses
  • Workshops
  • Seminars
  • Conference attendance
  • Formal education course of study
  • Observational placement

Two professional references are required. The ACN/ACNP review committee may contact these referees as part of the assessment process for the scholarships.

Selection criteria

  • The scholarship will be awarded to the applicant who can best demonstrate that the proposed activity will add to both the body of knowledge on nurse practitioner roles and models of care.

Applicants must complete the selection questions and the declaration included in this application.

Applications close 15 April 2018.

Applicants will be notified by email of the outcome of their application in early July 2018. The successful applicant will be invited to receive the award at the ACN Oration, Investiture of Fellows and the presentation of Grants and Awards. This will be held at the National Nursing Forum on Tuesday 28 August at the Gold Coast Convention Centre. The recipient is also invited to the ACNP conference to be held in Canberra, 10-11 September.

  • ACN and ACNP reserve the right to not make an offer of an award.
  • The ACN/ACNP Review Committee will undertake assessment of all applications and their decision will be final.
  • Applications are competitive and ACN/ACNPreserves the right to withdraw the award should conditions not be satisfied.
  • Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  • The successful applicant is required to submit a brief report to ACN/ACNP within three months of completion of the education activitydescribing the outcomes and benefits.
  • The successful applicant will be required to present at a subsequent ACNP conference, within the next 2 years.
  • ACN and ACNP are to be acknowledged in any publication or presentation resulting from funding support.
  • ACNand ACNP reserve the right to publish information about the scholarship and successful applicant in their medium of choice.
