Kirkcaldy Curling School

History

Kirkcaldy Curling School was established in 1975 by former RCCC President George Hardie. George set up the Fife young curlers group and he went on to become the team manager for the first Olympic Curling Squads and coached many Scottish championship winning rinks.

Aims

The remit of the school is the same as it was all those years ago our group of enthusiastic coaches are there to encourage as many people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the sport of curling.

Our main objectives are –

  • Develop curling within primary and secondary schools
  • Increase participation numbers in the area
  • Create a clear and defined “Player Pathway” with a development supply structure
  • Raise the profile of the sport and the ice rink in the area
  • Increase membership benefits
  • Increase opportunities for volunteers in the area
  • Make it fun and safe

Equipment

All that is required are warm layers of loose clothing and clean rubber soled trainers or tennis shoes, all other equipment is supplied by the ice rink.

Juniors

Curling’s Cool Primary School Programme

The Royal Caledonian Curling Club supports this programme to give Primary 6 & 7 children an opportunity to learn the basics of curling in a four session course. Sessions take place within the school curriculum, usually Fridays 10.00 – 12.00.

After School Club

At present we have a club set up and we are running these sessions until Christmas, they will be held on Wednesdays 16.00 -17.00 and if we get a good response more may be held up to March.

Coaching

Juniors are encouraged to come along to any of the adult courses if they wish and also to join the Virtual Club to give them regular games, juniors are charged 50% of adult prices.

Adults

Drop in Sessions

These are held throughout the season and allow people to receive coaching without having to book.

Try Curling

Currently 2 evening sessions are held, one at the start of the season – Sept./ Oct. and another in Feb./Mar. Both of these are FREE. These are aimed at novice curlers and are open to all ages and abilities. The session consists of some basic instruction followed by a short game then an introduction to the social side of curling afterwards. Clubs are invited to assist the coaches and encouraged to bring along any friends or family who may like to try the game.

Beginner’s Course

The course is primarily a follow up to the Try Curling, but is open to anyone. Curling is a sport that can be taken up by people from 8 to 80, it is fun, friendly and offers many challenges. Attendance at a two session course will cover all the basic skills needed to play a game.

Virtual Club

Fife Ice Arena Virtual Curling Club was established in 2010.As a follow up to the Beginner’s Course, new players can gain experience of playing in a fun environment with other players by joining the Virtual Club. All those involved are at the same level and all gain experience and confidence together. During the season there may be opportunities to play against Virtual Clubs from other ice rinks. Qualified coaches are on hand to assist.

Curling Clinics

The clinics are intended for all level of curlers and cover all aspects of the game. A typical clinic will focus on the delivery in all its aspects, however the clinic can be tailored to suit the needs of the participants. Video analysis facilities are available.

Curling for people with Disability

Wheelchair Curling

This is a rapidly developing aspect of curling and allows wheelchair users to participate in the sport.

Wheelchair curling started in Scotland in 1999 and has really taken off. There are now wheelchair curling clubs across Scotland.

Despite the game’s youth, Scottish Wheelchair Curlers have been successful on the international stage winning the 2004 and 2005 Wheelchair Curling World Championships.

In wheelchair curling teams must have both men and women in the team. In addition, there is no sweeping in this game, thus players must rely only on their deliveries for accuracy.

Visually Impaired Curling

This is a recent development in curling and allows blind or partially sighted people to participate.

Groups

Individuals, Groups, Clubs and Businesses

Kirkcaldy Curling School can offer instruction to all of the above groups such as Cubs , Scouts, Youth Clubs and Bowling Clubs. Corporate events can also be arranged including catering. Courses are tailored to suit individual requirements and as such costs vary.
